This dissertation examines the correlation between a university student’s participation in sports clubs and his/her stress management and adjustment to university life. In order to investigate, a survey was carried out in 4 universities in Kyunggi-do, on two groups of university students: those who participated in sports clubs and those who didn't. Out of the 700 respondents, 80 did not give complete or sincere answers and were excluded as a result. Therefore, 620 replies from the survery were analyzed in this investigation. In order to process the data, we used PASW 18.0 and to calculate the descriptive statistic figures for the measures used in the research, we calculated the cronbach’s alpha coefficient. To verify the factorial validity of the measurement tool, an exploratory factor analyssis was carried out. Also, in order the verify the difference between the demographic characteristics and the effects of sports clubs on stress management and adjustment to university life, a T Test and ANOVA was carried out. Finally, in order to verify the relationship between stress management and adjustment into university life, the correlation between the lower measures were analyzed. The results of the investigation are as follows: First, students showed differences in adjustment to university life and stress management depending on whether they took part in sports clubs or not. Students who took part in sports clubs and activities showed to have better adjusted into university life, both psychologically and physically, and also proved to have more social and academic motivations. Also, their response to problems and stress management were better than those who didn't take part in sports clubs. From this, we were able to verify that a university student’s participation in sports clubs had a positive effect on his/her stress management and adjustment to university life. Second, the investigation on the relationship between adjustment to university life and stress management showed to have statistically significant correlations in all factors apart from social adjustment and the pursuit for social support. Of the factors of adjustment, social adjustment and emotional adjustment corresponded with emotional management the most, physical adjustment with problem focused reaction, academic adjustment with the pursuit for social support, and the attachment to the university with problem focused reaction the most in a statistically significant manner. Third, the analysis on the effects of different levels of participation in sports clubs on adjustment to university life and stress management showed that there were statistically significant correlations. Of the three measuring factors of participation, period of participation, total time of participation, and frequency of participation, the frequency showed to have most correlation on the factors of adjustment to university life (academic, social, emotional, physical adjustment). The frequency of participation showed to also explain best the effects on the factors of stress management (problem focused reaction, emotional reaction, positive thinking, pursuit for social support). The analysis showed to have an explanation power of 37.0~68.3%. From the results above, the positive effects of sports club activities on stress management and adjustment to university life was proved. Therefore, sports club activities should be encouraged so that students can take part in physical activities, and a campaign or support program to promote awareness of the positive effects of physical activities and sport clubs should be organised by authorities.
