This study analyzes the effect of music therapy based on ‘Korean traditional folk songs’ on enhancing the social intercourse skill of the elderly with dementia. Ten folk songs are selected for them to sing along, keep time on drums and do some physical activities and a music therapy application plan is designed which uses various instruments and small objects. The subjects of this study are 6 elderly patients over 80 under treatment in ‘Hospital B’ located in Bundang-gu, Seongnam city who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, kidney disease and senile disorder. And the result of the study is like following. First, They have shown the lowest rate of performance while they are performing ‘bee and butterfly dance’ with their teammates wearing ’Hansam’ and singing together. They tried to follow the dance at first in a passive manner but soon they stopped it and just looked at the therapist’s dancing. They kept doing this action repeatedly. Second, they have shown the highest rate of performance in ‘Ganggangsullae’ which accompanies changing lyrics and beating small instruments. And as a ‘Songwriting’ activity, the therapist led the clients to put their mate’s name in the refrain of the song. They also showed a high rate of performance of 58.3% in ‘pulling ropes’ and ‘handing over some materials to the next person’. Third, the clients have shown a higher rate of performance when activities accompanied using small instruments and beating Jangdan. In short, the result of performance was better when familiar folk songs to the clients accompany ‘short and simple lyrics’, ‘repetitive beating’ and ‘changing lyrics’. From the results above, we can see that the therapeutic plan using ‘Korean traditional folk songs’ is effective on the elderly with dementia because of their various beats, lyrics and familiar melody. Moreover, they have shown a more therapeutic effect in activities where small instruments are used.
