The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of bibliotherapy using Korean folk tales on cultural and school adjustment of elementary school children from multicultural families, which formed because of maternal interracial marriage.
For this study, we implemented a four-week long bibliotherapy beginning in the 4th week of August in 2013 which consisted of eight sessions in total (two sessions per week). Participants were three 4th grade students of multicultural families who lived in Iksan, Jeonbook.
In each session lasting about 40 minutes, we conducted inspection in the following order: pre-test through enculturation and school adaptation inspection sheet, selection of traditional fairy tales concerning developmental stages and situations, implementation of the bibliotherapy program with the traditional fairy tales and of post-test.
In the chapter Ⅱ, we dealt with the concepts of multicultural families with a focus on maternal interracial marriage, enculturation and school adaptation of multicultural students, proposing a theoretical basis for successful incorporation of the bibliotherapy program using traditional Korean fairy tales.
In the chapter Ⅲ, we conducted preliminary interview with parents and teachers for baseline analysis of target students, and implemented overall fact-revealing for the behavior characteristic and family environment through initial interview with the subjects of the study.
In addition, for the component of enculturation variables, we referred to the existing studies about cultural identity, emotional lethargic, cultural openness and social alienation to make an enculturation inspection questionnaire. With the questionnaire for school adaptation check, we proceeded preliminary inspection referring to the existing studies of learning activity, school regulations, peer relations and relationship with the teachers, for the components of school adaptation variables.
For fact-revealing and preliminary examination, we chose seven traditional fairy tales for the bibliotherapy program. For the fist and second session, comprehension of flow of thoughts through self expression progressed. From third to sixth session, inspection of surroundings for social values and for seventh and eighth session, holding an optimistic view for the social values of "togetherness" and "beseemingness" followed. To detect the change occurred by the program, we compared pre-test and post-test scores and conducted content analysis of narratives of the subjects which were written right after each session was done.
In the chapter Ⅳ, we examined the influence of the bibliotherapy program using seven traditional fairy tales on enculturation and school adaptation. Enculturation and school adaptation both showed remarkable enhancement compared with the beforehand of the application of the program. With regards to enculturation, noticeable changes occurred in cultural openness and emotional lethargic categories especially. Concerning school adaptation, remarkable changes occurred in peer and teacher relations. We conveyed a qualitative analysis of application of the program three times: at beginning, in the middle, and at the end. Positive alterations in peer and teacher relationships were not clearly observed at beginning but became readily apparent as the program proceeded towards the middle and the end.
Conclusion is made as follows. First, students of multicultural families due to maternal interracial marriage demand education and learning associated with enculturation processes. Second, we need to help those students adjust to school and improve their relationships with peers and teachers. Third, as a tool for school adaptation, the utilization of traditional fairy tales for easy and quick approachment of students is effective not only for learning korean language but also for comprehending the Korean culture and improving school adaptation.
The study represents much to the implementation of the bibliotherapy program utilizing traditional fairy tale as a medium to help multicultural students’ enculturation and school adaptation. Furthermore, this study confirmed the effectiveness of the bibliotherapy using traditional fairy tales for the enculturation and school adaptation of students from multicultural families.
Therefore, it is expected that the bibliotherapy using traditional fairy tales will make a contribution to multicultural family students’ enculturation and school adaptation.
