This study was started to find the answers of our question of science of sermon and existential problem of Korean churches. For this, the purpose of this study is to search hopesermon to give answers to us through “A Study on the hopeSermon and the whole life of Cho, Yonggi” (Yeongsan is the pseudonym of pastor Cho).
Until now, as for the studies on Yeongsan, pneumatology, secular sermon and partial studies on sermon have been studied fragmentally a lot, but as for the studies on the life of Yeongsan and his overall sermon were almost nonexistent. Therefore, the contention was started according to academic and practical requirement through study on his life and sermons. As for the materials of studies, sermons of Lord’s Day and his books and papers published in journals and the study was carried out according to the following orders.
The first chapter is the introduction of this thesis; Yeongsan was attracted attention through existential and sermon question of Korean churches at the necessity of the research. Pastor Yeongsan Cho, Yong gi who has been preaching hopesermons all the time from the pioneering on the day of May 18, 1958 to his retirements and henceforth sermon missionary with confidence as he was called a pastor to give hope according to the requirements of hopesermon and the necessities, purpose and method of research of hopesermon of pastor Yeongsan Cho, Yonggi according to it.
In Chapter II, it was examined the ‘A study on the life of Yeongsan and his background to form sermons’. Yeongsan was rich in his childhood but he experienced despair according to changing of names by Japan due to the war and economic difficulties due to failure in election of his father since elementary school. Especially, the crisis of death and futility of life in accordance of consumption when he was 17 years old, the second grades of high school became the decisive basement of Yeongsan and had influence on his sermons. As for Yeongsan who experienced absolute despair of life, Yeongsan came to have a theoretical concept that God is a good God unlike other gods that he believed before and Jesus Christ who saved us with his cross and carried diseases became the main theme of his sermons. And since he experienced the Holy Spirit during the healing process, the accompanying and communication of the Holy Spirit enabled hope sermons and became the basement of his pastoral ministry. Oral Roberts, the colleague who Yeongsan met during his ministry gave influence Yeongsan a comprehension about healing ministry by the Holy Spirit, Robert Schuller positive message, J. Moltmann theoretical influence of hope from the theology of hope and Billy Graham the influence evangelical preaching. These influences from his colleagues helped his sermons and ministry a lot.
The Chapter III covered theoretical basements of hopesermons of Yeongsan. Ministry theological; fivefold gospel, ministry philosophical; triple time salvation (blessing) and ministry methodical; four-dimensional spirituality prepared the ground of ministry sermon on the basis of 7-faith of Full Gospel. Especially, the four-dimensional spirituality applied fivefold gospel and triple time salvation (blessing) prepared the powerful ground of ministry sermon: that is hope. Hope spoken by Yeongsan could be “to expect good God by accompanying with the Holy Spirit and opening oneself toward the future that would be completed by Jesus Christ.” This conviction of Yeongsan created his own sermon style as hopesermon.
The Chapther IV analyzed hopesermon of Yeongsan. 20 sermons of Lord’s Day were selected among total 1,341 from 1981 to 2012 to be analyzed. And the outline of 20 sermons first to analyze and sermons of Yeongsan were analyzed by using the Heidelberg method of sermon analysis for practical analysis. Through analysis results of Chapter IV, it became the research ground from Chapter V to VII.
Chapter V studied on characteristics of hopesermon of Yeongsan. On the basis of Chapter VI, it was examined the characteristics of hopesermon of Yeongsan by dividing into contents and formal characteristics of sermon. As for formal characteristics, it was composed of traditional deductive great message sermon as thematic sermon and the biblical text and themes were concentrated to a part. As for content characteristics, it was composed of positive hopesermon, and sermon to fulfill the requirements of audience and powerful healing by the Holy Spirit. Interestingly, there were not so many sermons for healing by the Holy Spirit only actually. However, sermons or images of Yeongsan remind the word, ‘healing by the Holy Spirit’. It is considered for his prayers for healing by the Holy Spirit after sermons of Lord’s Day and his experience to be healed as for the reason.
Chapter VI examined hopesermon and communication of Yeongsan. Especially, this chapter is the part to deliver sermon which can be the best of sermons of Yeongsan. The first is the comprehension for hopesermon to help etymological understanding. The second was studied communication for hopesermon with the basic elements of sermon (pastor, audience, text and the perspective of the Holy Spirit) of Fred B. Craddock. This would be grounds to comprehend Yeongsan and his sermons.
Chapter VII is the study on evaluation of hopesermon and its application. This chapter sheds new light on the study until six chapters and covered evaluation of hopesermon (positive and negative) and inheritance of hopesermon at the pulpit of Korean churches. Five types of sermon to succeed according to study on hopesermon and three alternatives which were pointed out to be desired were suggested, so it was proposed to apply at the pulpit of Korean churches.
