A Study on Montage Technique to Implement Suspense in Alfred Hitchcock Films by. Han Eun sil Major in Film Department of Performing Arts and Multimedia Graduate School, Kookmin University, Seoul, Korea Films have the process of construction just as all forms of art have it. In the process, stories are structured, plots are made up of story units, and scenes and shorts are composed of in accord with the plots. The shorts which were filmed to the format are reconstructed. It is the montage that is the process. As technologies have been developed, the length of films has been prolonged. Compared to the earlier films, which did not need to execute the organic montage functions because of the short running time, they have a desire to tell the audiences lots of stories in the modern ones. To involve thematic consciousness, it’s very important to consider each composition. Moreover, as the composition plays a great role in strengthening the storytelling of the film, montages are regarded as the essential element that many film directors think could involve what they want to show in their films. The concept of montage in films is overall explained from the technical operation of connecting shorts and shorts, which is the simplest dimension, to the combination of a variety of artistic elements and images for the aesthetic purpose. Montage has various ways in which it tells audiences the events in films, makes the relationship of meanings, and adjusts audiences’ perception of rational evidence and logic through images and sounds. Films create time and space with the help of montage as well. Although many of the movie experts claim that the process of montage is unnecessary, it is acknowledged as an art that creates time and space in films. Montage is not the technical skill of cutting and attaching a roll of film, but the significant means of composing the whole film and expressing the director’s intention. Accordingly, we could understand the entire film as well as his or her intention through the montage in it. In short, the audiences grasp the movie through the combination of shorts, from each short to the sequence. It’s the director Alfred Hitchcock that is one of the directors who showed the variety of cinematic expressional arts. In his film “Rope(1948)”, he tried to be free of the montage, but he eventually said “A film must be edited.” Thus, we need to focus on how the montage is embodied which plays an important role in films. This study has two purposes as follows: First, how the montage techniques in Hitchcock’s films are embodied by studying them in his films. Second, how they are playing their roles as dramatic elements in films. Methodologically, this study is first classifying the montage techniques that are adopted as dramatic elements in the unified structure of his works, and then analyzing the sequences that take advantages of each montage technique, fundamentally with the techniques increasing tension and contributing to suspense, based on the established theories. In his works, montage technique, which contribute to realizing suspense , are classified in four: a technique which interlinks visual elements with dramatic elements, a technique which controls the dramatic paces, a technique which connects auditory elements with dramatic elements, and a technique which highlights the director’s subjective view. This study is searching for those montage techniques in his films and analyzing the sequences, and then deconstructing the scenes and analyzing the shorts and the results that the combinations of shorts bring about. It’s going to find out on which theories of the established ones those techniques are based and analyze the similarities and the differences. By studying them, we would figure out how montage techniques are embodied in films and how they are playing roles as dramatic elements. Furthermore, we could verify the possibilities that montages would have in cinematic expression.
