This study aims to examine what effects school counselors’ awareness of professionalism and support from their schools have on their job satisfaction and to provide potential implications for improving school counseling and its related works. More detailed purposes of this study are as follows. First, this study investigates the gaps that exist in school counselors’ awareness of professionalism, school support and job satisfaction. Second, it locates the relations among the three factors. Third, it examines the effects of the first two factors on the last one. This study surveyed a total of 100 school counselors that was working in middle or high schools located in Ulsan and Busan Metropolitan cities. They participated in this research via e-mail or personal visit, and three instruments that were designed to measure the scales of professionalism awareness, school support and job satisfaction were employed after they had been revised according to the context of this study. Using SPSS/PC 20.0, the data collected were analyzed, and the analyses of frequency, T-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and regression were performed. Findings of the statistical analyses may be summarized as follows. First, in terms of school counselors’ backgrounds, statistically significant differences were shown in the level of education and the year of career for their awareness of professionalism, whereas the scale of school support showed a statically significant difference only in the year of career. Second, the analysis of the correlation between school counselors’ awareness of professionalism and school support showed that it was statistically significant (r=.61, p<.01). Third, the correlation between school support and job satisfaction was also statistically significant (r=.83, p<.01). Fourth, the result of regression analysis showed that two sub-categories of professionalism awareness, counselor personality and counsel characteristic, were statistically significant variables (β=.72, P<.05 and β=1.72, P<.05) explaining 41 % of job satisfaction. Fifth, mutual trust, benefit from school environment, service information from students, understanding of role and programs, all subcategories under school support, were statistically significant (β=1.92, P<.001; β=1.09, P<.01; β=1.28, P<.01; β=.61, P<.05; and β=.77, P<.05), explaining 74% of job satisfaction. Sixth, the result of the multiple regression with all sub-categories of professional awareness and school support showed that mutual trust, benefit from school environment, program and service information from students were statistically significant (β=.1.73, P<.01; β=1.14, P<.01; β=.71, P<.05; and β=1.02, P<.05), explaining 76% of job satisfaction. Although school counselors’ job responsibilities are different from those of subject teachers, their stress and burnout caused by their specialty at work has not been seriously taken at school. As their job satisfaction may lead to more caring counseling environments, they should have emotional stability and happiness in their workplaces, contributing to the improvement of students’ mental health. Therefore, it is necessary that school counselors make efforts into improving their professional abilities, and that schools, particularly principles, provide administrative support for effective school counseling.
