This research was carried out in order to explore factors that affect happiness of social workers, to develop a scale that can be used to measure happiness of social workers, and to verify the developed scale. For the purposes, following efforts have been made in this research. First, factors are explored that could affect happy life for operational definition of the concept of happiness that can be shared by a bibliographical study and the targets of this survey. Second, a scale was developed that can be used to measure happiness of social workers with emphasis on the aspects of social welfare by analyzing the factors that affect the concept of the explored happiness as well as the happiness. Third, an attempt was made to verify reliability and validity of the happiness scale. Fourth, a structured scale was completed that can be used to measure happiness of social workers. In this research, a bibliographical study and a survey study were carried out at the same time. In the bibliographical study, the concept of happiness was defined, and efforts were made to describe factors that affect happiness and development of a scale that can be used to measure happiness. The survey study was carried out four times with the social workers who are actually working in the field of social work throughout the nation as the target. For the data collected, a frequency analysis was carried out for a factor analysis, and another analysis was carried out for question items that are derived for scale development together with an exploratory factor analysis. And for the verification of validation, its validity was checked. The process and the result of this research can be summarized as follows. To explore the factors that affect happiness of social workers, the concept of happiness was defined through a bibliographical survey. And to explore experiential factors for happiness of social workers, the first open-ended questionnaire survey was carried out. As a result of this survey, the factors that affect happiness of social workers are classified as 5 factors related to social welfare and 15 factors related to general consideration. From among factors affecting happiness which have been explored through the bibliographical survey and the 1st questionnaire survey, 110 initial question items have been derived for the development of a happiness scale based on social welfare consideration. And these items have been adjusted to 94 items through a review of content validity by the experts, and a total of 89 pre-items have been confirmed through a pilot survey. Then, a total of 26 items have been derived as a result of the 2nd questionnaire survey using the 89 pre-items. For these items, a verification of content validity was carried out to finally come up with 26 scale items of 4 factors. And for validation of these scale items, a confirmatory factor analysis was carried out and its convergent validity was verified. For the confirmatory factor analysis, the 3rd questionnaire survey was carried out using the 26 items, which resulted in 23 items of happiness scale for social workers as 3 items have been eliminated in the process. After this, a convergent analysis was carried out by implementing a correlation analysis between the developed scale and a similar scale. In order to check the convergent validity, the 4th questionnaire survey was carried out with the social workers who had participated in the 2nd questionnaire survey as the target. The result showed a high correlation score, which proved that the newly developed happiness scale for social workers had a construct validity. This result of the present research has the following implications: First, this research has derived a concept of happiness from social workers who are sampled from throughout the nation and discovered a factor structure that is simple and clear enough to be used in measuring happiness of social workers with concrete construct concepts. The scale that was developed in this research has a significance in that it complemented methodological limitations that plagued the existing happiness scales, enabling more scientific measuring of happiness for social workers. Second, although there have been many discussions on happiness and many scales that have been developed for measuring happiness thus far, this is the first research on scale development with social workers who are actually working in the field as its target. This is significant in that, in the area of social welfare where only happiness of service targets was emphasized it not only provoked an interest in the importance of happiness of the social workers, it also provided an occasion where social workers themselves form a positive attitude for pursuing their own happiness and express more interest therein. Third, using the result of this research, one can measure the attitude of social workers, their values, constituting factors of happiness, and the degree of happiness. To social welfare organizations, it will provide an opportunity to grasp the difference on the happiness of social workers based on objective and subjective characteristics. It can be utilized as basic data which are used to improve various conditions that are necessary to promote the happiness of social workers who work in diverse welfare sites. It can also be used with benefit in clarifying how the variables that explain happiness vary and how core conditions of happiness change depending on the major activity area of social workers. Fourth, the happiness scale of social workers that was developed enjoys high reliability and validity when compared to preceding studies for developing existing happiness scales. In a situation where there is no scale that can measure happiness of social workers, a scientific scale that enjoys high reliability and validity can function as a very useful tool.
