This thesis focuses on synthesis, characterization and application of reduced graphene oxide/SnO2 and reduced graphene oxide/Pd nanocomposites in green solvents, including ionic liquid and supercritical CO2. In the first work, reduced graphene oxide/SnO2 nanocomposites were synthesized within 10 min using a facile microwave-assisted method in an ionic liquid, a clean solvent, without any reducing reagent. The tetragonal structure of SnO2 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that graphene sheets were coated uniformly with SnO2 nanoparticles with a small mean diameter of approximately 5 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the removal of oxygenous functional groups from graphene oxide to graphene with the formation of SnO2 simultaneously. The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared nanocomposites for the degradation of methylene blue under UV light irradiation were investigated. The nanocomposites exhibited better photodegradation efficiency than the bare SnO2 nanoparticles. In the second work, graphene sheets were decorated with palladium nanoparticles via an easy and efficiently method in supercritical CO2. The nanoparticles were formed on graphene sheets through a simple hydrogen reduction from palladium (II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate precursor in supercritical CO2. The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Highly dispersed nanoparticles of varying size and shape were well adhered to graphene sheets. The composites showed high catalytic activities for the Suzuki reaction under aqueous and aerobic conditions within 5 min. The influence of the different Pd precursor loading on the catalytic activities of the composites was also investigated.
