In Korea every year a lot of married couples are choosing to divorce without effectively solving marriage conflicts that come from various factors. Ever since statistical research had begun in Korea, both the rate and positive opinion for divorce has increased. The rate has fallen to half for both Christians and non-Christians who have marital problems and consult church counseling. Also, the types of marital conflicts shown in counseling are similar amongst couples, regardless of Christian faith. In order to solve marital conflicts, many Christian married couples consider divorce, and the number of them has increased more and more. In this situation, I am able to devise a multi-program counseling approach as a method to effectively solve the conflicts of married couples who visit the center of church counseling, and to help the restoration of their relationships. In the field of counseling in the 21st century, various methods are integrated to effectively counsel clients in a variety of contexts. The types of marital conflicts are as many as the number of married couples, so the integrative approach of methods is necessary. The general idea of family has weakened, and the structure of its consciousness has been gradually westernized. As a result, many people focus on the person more than family. However, a traditional concept of family has not disappeared completely, and it has affected relationships in marriage. Many young adults marry late due to social and cultural factors. As a result, they not only live with their parents, but also are dependent on them. The satisfaction of spouses has remarkably decreased due to the lack of time spent with together among married couples. These factors have negatively effects on their relationships and emotional capacities. Currently, Korean married couples pursue his or her individual happiness more than family, so they tend to easily consider divorce without patience. Therefore, Korean married couples desperately need counselling help in their situations. After researching topics on general counseling, it is clear thatthere are many types of marriage counseling. However, their roles are weak due to their distorted approach. In addition, counseling of the Korean community provide little professional help to married couples in crisis. The models of marital counseling used in Korea have limits in approaching various current situations. While many Koreans are strongly interested in family counseling in Korea, the skills of solution; personalization; improving differentiation of self, equity and intimacy for current problems; and systematic skills for solving problems and developing a functional system of value for family and marriage are needed. Therefore, current marital counseling should be approached to solve emotional problems, restore intimate relationships, and achieve balance in marriage. With the westernization of Korean couples, their attitudes have changed when approaching problems, so we need a new model to solve them. After my careful research of Christian marriage counselors, I chose the marriage counseling of Norman Wright. He deals with both linguistic and non-linguistic aspects as the basic theory of communication, uses Scripture as the most important aspect, utilizes cognitional method to recognize self and spouse, and exploits the skill of behavioral counseling to connect recognition to behavior. He also freely uses all the general skills of counseling and psychological theories in accordance with the situation of couples and the direction of counseling in the field of marriage counseling. Thus, I believe that this method is effective for Korean married couples because they have strong individual ways of thinking which reflects American emotion. I structured the counseling world of Norman Wright, analyzed the models for marriage counseling, and evaluated marriage counseling as a whole. In addition, I designed an integrative couple’s counseling program focused on restoration of marriage according to the method so that it may be applied to the context of Korean couples. In order to carefully approach the situations of couples, to diagnose them, and to establish counseling plans, I added the enriching program established by Dr. David H Olsen. Finally, I analyzed and evaluated the cases of marriage counseling which applied to integrative couple’s counseling models. I do not use Scripture in counseling for non-Christian couples in order to evaluatethe model’s effectiveness. As a result, I conclude that it is a proper method to use for married couples under marital conflicts and the divorce crisis in Korean congregations. I also propose that it is helpful for both Christian and non-Christian couples in crisis if integrative couple’s counseling models are effectively used in Korean churches. Pastoral counselors should attempt to help families keep godly values in a good way. In particular, he or she should consider the culture of a couple in accordance with the basic emotion and the period of change, and keep the role to restore marriages by admitting their cultures. Thus, the integral couple’s counseling program will be a useful tool to guide couples to God’s ultimate blessings and to provide an opportunity for couples to take responsibility for their lives.
