The purpose of this research is to bring out the experiences on the childhood exploration of play therapy trainees through group interviews, and reveal the meaning of their psychological phenomena. To do so, a group of 7 play therapy trainees’ childhoods were explored through semi-structured questions for 8 sessions, which were held once a week for 2 hours per session. The semi-structured questionnaire used for data collection was reconstructed using the questions used in Colaizzi’s(1978) study Structure of reading experience that brought individual's existential change (Colaizzi, 1978, Lee Nam In, 2014) and group counseling program Object Relations Group Counseling Program (Sunwoo hyun, 2012) . Participants’ statements were recorded and videotaped upon their consent, and were transcribed so the questions in the next interview can be revised and modified. Collected data was qualitatively analyzed using Colaizzi’s Phenomenological Study, and 363 significant statements were selected. Also, from 91 formulated meanings, 22 themes, 7 theme clusters, and 3 categories were formed. The summary of the results discovered are as the following. First, ‘to know about myself due to psychological difficulties’ revealed 2 aspects. The psychological difficulties that the participants experience in daily life and acknowledging the insufficiencies as therapists demanded the participants to look back upon themselves and get organized. Second, ‘meeting my younger self in group experience’ revealed that the interaction among participants accelerated in exploring themselves. Third, in ‘understanding themselves and accepting others to experience a new start’, participants understood their current images. Especially, participants re-experienced resentment toward parents in childhood exploration; and through the experience of accepting themselves as they were, they were able to become psychologically relaxed on others as well, so they stopped resenting their parents and tried to understand them. The significance of childhood exploration of play therapy trainees was analyzed as the ‘discovery of connecting link’. Experience of childhood exploration enabled experiences within the group, re-experiencing the experiences with the parents, and integrated experiences within themselves. Furthermore, the experience brought changes in the perspective and attitude as play therapy trainees in the relationship with the children clients. The link between past and present enabled them to understand and accept themselves, who sought to form themselves into therapists, and provided an experience to develop as better play therapy trainees. The research provided an experiential basic data on the necessity of childhood exploration on the trainees for play therapy, which target children. Also, it verified the reason to experience self-understanding and accepting through educational analysis, as a requirement to become play therapists. Furthermore, this research is significant in the way that it considered the childhood exploration of play therapy trainees as a ‘connecting link’ in many relationships.
