This is a study on "show stoppers." Show stoppers are the supporting characters in a musical that bring comic relief to the audience. The role of the actor is to lighten the mood of the musical regardless of the main storyline. A Showstopper has his own unique song called the "Show Stopper Song" that used to be called the "comedy song" in early musical history. Although the role of "show stopper" is vital to control the mood of the musical, there was no complete study on the role of "showstopper." Because show stoppers were not considered to be important, there was no thorough information on show stoppers: only small excerpts in books about show stopper songs. The object of this study is to uncover the importance of the show stopper by shedding new light on the show stopper and discovering the roots of the show stopper. The role of show stopper can be traced back to western origins: more specifically, the "Chorus" from Greek plays. Though the current role of show stopper and role of the Chorus are very different, they essentially serve the same function. In the sixteenth centery, the Italian Commcdia dell' arte was able to gain a profitable following and thus allowed performing artists to develop their skills in acting and to develop their play techniques. Shakespeare continued to develop the techniques of acting in Commcdia dell'arte. Before, the role of the show stopper was not elevated, but now, the importance of the showstopper is visible in musicals today like: Thenardier in Les Miserables, Pepper in Mamma Mia, Mark and Angel in Rent, and Maknae Samchon in Dalgona. This dissertation compares and contrasts the characteristics of all the show stoppers from the above mentioned musicals. First, this dissertation will define the role of show stopper by examining the history of plays. Second, this dissertation will study specific musical works. Third, this dissertation will shed new light on the value of the show stopper in a musical, and this dissertation can be used by writers and actors as a guide to effectively utilize the role of a showstopper.
