Due to the differences between Chinese and South Korean economic systems and social environments, there are differences in their accounting regulations, accounting treatments, accounting manifestations and many other aspects. These differences cause the inconvenience of economic exchanges between the two countries and discourage investment activities. The purpose of this study is to review the development of accounting standards of China and South Korea, analyze the similarities and differences between the accounting standards in both countries, and compare the accounting disclosures between two companies representing each country. Through this thesis, the following conclusions can be drawn. Firstly, through the comparisons of the production and development stage of accounting standards in the two countries, it can be concluded that the development of Chinese accounting standards are mainly affected by the social environments and the changes of the national system, while the Korean accounting standards, mainly driven by an organization in a private sector, are affected more by the economic environments. Secondly, the types of financial statements to be reported are the same between two countries because both countries follow international financial accounting standards. However, the terminologies used for the financial statements are different because the economic system, accounting regulations, and law are different. Finally, through the comparison of the actual examples of China Unicom Co. Ltd. and South Korea SK Telecom Co. Ltd., it can be concluded that the meanings of financial statements components are mostly the same, but the uses of the terms are different in many accounts. These differences seem to result from the different economies of the two countries. Overall, the basic accounting concepts and accounting systems of the two countries, such as in accounting principles and financial statements are similar, but there are differences in terminology and classification of accounts and other aspects of the financial statements, which reflect the differences in the two countries’ establishments and developments of their accounting standards and their actual economies. This thesis would give contributions to understand and analyze the financial statements of companies in China and South Korea.
