The purpose of this study was to verify the usefulness of a fine blanking process by analogizing the complex deformations of a processing plate in an extremely narrow area of the shear part of a fine blanking tool and the factors that control the characteristics of the fine blanking process; furthermore, two materials, SCP-1 and SHP-1, were studied to establish a database and thus realize wider and more effective application of the advantages of the fine blanking process in which a mechanical press is employed. First, the flow of materials through a V-ring was analyzed, and these results were compared with the results obtained from an experiment. Further, the shape of the ideal shear surface was determined by changing the force applied to the V-ring, and the effects of changes in the pressure applied to the V-ring on the shape of the shear surface were identified. Finally, the changes in the height of a die roll resulting from changes in shear rates and the effects of a gap between a punch and the die were studied. The experimental results suggested that SCP-1 has a good shear surface; the die roll height was the lowest when the distance from the shear line to the center of the V-ring was 2 mm and 1.5 mm in SCP-1 and SHP-1, respectively. When the pressure applied to the die roll was 140 MPa, the die roll height decreased owing to the sufficient press amount ; furthermore, the die roll height decreased by 1% (0.03 mm) with respect to the material thickness because of the effect of the gap . The values obtained through the analysis and the experiment differed slightly; however, this difference resulted from the fact that in the analysis, the V-ring was considered to achieve a complete press job, whereas in the experiment, the V-ring achieved approximately 97% press. A comparison of the analytical and experimental results for shear phases of 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90% indicated that the die roll height increased until the 70% shear phase but decreased slightly in the 90% shear phase in the analysis as well as the experiment. In the 90% shear phase, the hydrostatic pressure is expected to be achieved by the effective suppression of the flow of materials accompanied by an increase in the pressure of the counter punch; in the future through the forming analysis this part should be required to identify the cause.
