As media art accepts diverse digital technologies, there is an increasing number of artworks that interact with the audience and require its proactive participation. Hence, it is necessary to understand activeness factors that encourage the audience to participate. To study the activeness demonstrated in media art, this study analyzed multidimensional activeness of selectivity, involvement, and utility by quoting the audience activeness model of Levy & Windahl, which analyzes changes in audience activeness. The concept of self-leading activeness was quoted especially for more systematic study on involvement activeness. The results were qualitatively analyzed. The analysis showed that expectation on participation had the greatest impact in selective activeness. Participation and experience were significant properties of media art as well as strong selective standards for the audience. However, the audience checked for the credibility of exhibition content by searching reviews on social media and blogs, or through friends’ recommendations, because media art is an unfamiliar genre of art with low awareness and low verification of exhibition content. Involved activeness was greatly influenced by media art properties including interactivity, network, tactility, and virtuality, which affect each other. With the virtualized information through network, content and expression methods of the artworks were diversified. New and creative artworks and diverse tactual responses through hands, eyes, and ears provided original and fresh experience and motivated further exploration, increasing participation activities. The higher synesthesia and playfulness of the artwork was, the higher voluntary participation was. Narcissism and aesthetics were also significant in involved activeness. It was shown that artworks even without participation elements could, with its high aesthetics, encourage the audience to self-voluntarily participate, which demonstrated that aesthetics worked as involved activeness factors. Among the non-involvement elements was the exhibition guides’ untimely comments, which, when provided before the audience became curious about the artwork, led to the audiences' passive behavior and decreased voluntary curiosity and interest. If the response of the artwork was significant, participation activities continued even with a long response time, which implied that the response time of the artwork was affected by the quality of the response. In using activeness, comprehension and positive attitude toward media art were the most significant changes. For the types of utility, there were many personal and psychological cases connecting artworks with personal situations, while social application was not frequently observed. This study has some limitations in that its exhibition properties and the number of interviewees were limited, and its data analysis was not sufficiently precise. However, it is still meaningful because it analyzed activeness, an aspect significant to the audience, from their own perspectives. Because the results were derived from the direct recipients of media art with first-hand experience, the results will be able to provide practical help as a basic guideline for developing and producing artworks that can communicate and interact with the audience.
