The purpose of this study was to suggest a more effective intervention in developing the children language ability by analyzing the group intervention through the dramatic play's effect on the mentally retarded children. For this purpose, this study selected 4 mentally retarded children in their ages ranging full-6~7 years old and made them participate in a dramatic play program where they specifically experienced like voluntarily making the dialogues for a drama based on the fairy story's synopsis, and speaking their lines and taking actions on after having read a fairy story. They participated in the dramatic play program which composed of total 10 pieces of life fairy stories for total 10 sessions during 5 weeks every twice sessions a week. A program for each session was developed into the introduction stage (15 minutes), the action stage (30 minutes) and the finish stage (5 minutes). In order to identify how the effects of group intervention through the dramatic play on the mentally retarded children's language ability, the investigator conducted the pre-test and the post-test. The results of this study are as follows. First, the group intervention through the dramatic play positively influenced on improving the mentally retarded children's language understanding ability. In the standardized tests, the receptive language age was increased, and in the all items of answering to questions after hearing a story, choosing appropriate pictures, and arranging the pictures in order as a subordinate scope of language comprehension ability, there were drawn out some positive effects. Second, the group intervention through the dramatic play positively influenced on the mentally retarded children's language expression ability. It was found that in the standardized tests, their expressive language age was increased, and in the all items of the number of words, the coincidence of contents, the connection of contents, and the creative expression, the all participants' scores were increased. This study was an experiment research using a few cases, so its results were limited in being generalized, but they showed that a group intervention through the dramatic play could be effective in improving the mentally retarded children's language abilities.
