Usefulness of exhibition-connected education programs to enhance communication between museums and visitors원문보기

The purpose of this study is the educational program of the Seoul History Museum implemented in 2013 is examined as an instance of an exhibition-connected education program. In relation to this program, we assess how the museum is communicating with its visitors and investigate whether museum communication is operated according to its purpose and intent through education. To achieve this aim, the following research questions were established. First, how effective are exhibition-connected education programs as an educational method in the context of museum education? Second, what method can be used to enhance communication between museums and visitors through education? As elements of the exhibition-connected education programs of the Seoul History Museum, the children’s ‘Center of Chosun retail and commerce Woonjong-ga’ program and teenagers’ ‘Advanced intern’ program were analyzed. The selected programs were studied with regards to three areas of communication: communication between the exhibition-connected education program and the school education, communication between the education instructor and the visitors, and communication among the students receiving the education. The detailed activity contents were analyzed through questionnaire surveys and interviews. The following research results were obtained. First, the exhibition-connected education program was sufficient as a tool for the museum to communicate with all visitors. It sparked high interest in students, and the results showed that it offered them an opportunity to enhance their study achievements as they connected their new knowledge with what they learnt in school. The students who had participated in the exhibition-connected education program at the museum displayed creative elements such as independent-problem solving skills, curiosity/interest, and immersion in class. These results were achieved as the museum education induced curiosity and interest at the motivational stage and heightened the students’ desire to achieve learning goals. Contrary to other discretionary activities or special activities, the learning based on exhibits is characteristic to museums only. As such, it has been analyzed as a new and creative way of learning. Second, further improved educational methods should be developed from the analysis of visitors. Visitors are not only the subjects of education, which is one of the social roles of museums, but are also cultural consumers who make voluntary use of museums. The inter-dependent relationship between museums and visitors further emphasizes the need for research on visitors in relation to various aspects. Children and teenagers were chosen as the subjects of our analysis, as the effects of museum education are most distinct in those two visitor groups, and they are the main focus of the museums’ educational programs. The elementary school education program was implemented on 4th grade students who had not learnt about the Chosun period or participated in museum education before. When only the educational effect was emphasized, a distracted and unruly learning behavior was observed among the students. If the age, behavioral tendencies, and educational level of the subject group had been considered before the educational experience, the students may have achieved more learning through better concentration. Through characteristic research of various visitor types, the museum needs to develop an education plan allowing anyone to visit the museum and voluntarily take part in its educational programs, regardless of sex and age. As the visitors to the museum see the exhibits and participate in exhibition-connected education programs with others, they can communicate about the museum, making the experience easier and more beneficial. Furthermore, as they gain a greater understanding of the exhibits through museum education, they can form a bond with the museum. This will contribute to enhancing their overall quality of life and encourage them to cultivate emotion through culture and arts education. Third, promotion of the museum education is important. In our survey, a high percentage of teenagers responded that they had found out about the education through a school notice or from a teacher, and only a few teenagers had found about it while pursuing their personal interests. There were also many suggestions to the effect that they wanted easy access to information regarding the exhibitions or educational activities held in the museum. It is evident that there is a need for active online and offline promotion in order to provide detailed information about the museum to the public. The educational environment and services provided to visitors through exhibition-connected education programs can be seen as an important element to the success or failure of a museum. Visitors come to the museum seeking a new experience in terms of education and values, and an effective education program is expected to expand the probability for members of the public to become repeat visitors.
