Aided by affordability of Smartphones and availability of 3G and 4G networks, smart phone users increased drastically. The main cause of this smart phone growth is the benefit of mobility and internet capabilities. The smart phone offered opportunities for users to live in comfortable circumstances. However, the widespread use of smart phones has led to the problem of smart phone addiction. Especially, the number of adolescents addicted to smartphone use will increase because the popularization of smartphones is an inevitable social trend. And the younger they are, the more vulnerable they are. For this reason, it is emphasized on the need of research on eating habits and smart phone of adolescents, but this research is currently nonexistent until today. Therefore, in this study, we have investigated smart phone addiction depending on the gender of young people and intended to study about the effect of the smart phone addition on eating behavior and food intake. Knowing and understanding how smartphone addiction affects to adolescents can help us to create a proper guidance of nutrition and dietary habit This study is based on survey on high schools in Incheon City. This survey is conducted over 1,479 students regarding smart phone dependence, eating habits and eating frequency by food groups. Statistical analysis of data is post-verified by applying SPSS 12 program including χ2-test, T-test, One Way ANOVA and Tukey HSD. The results are as follows.
First, This survey is collected from 715 male students and 764 female students, and all their families were using smartphones. '3-5 hours’ use of smart phones was the most common group, and also there were more addicted students who are using more than 5 hours. The main places of frequent smartphone use were ‘during the transit’ and ‘while at home’. And the main time of smartphone use was 'every free moment’
Second, in case of male group, the research revealed that the more they were smartphone-addicted, the lower score of eating behavior they attained. But in the female group, there were no difference in eating habit according to how they dependant on smartphones.
Third, all of the male and female participants experience changes in eating speed, meal size, body weight and times of exercise, as they use smart phone longer time. In addition, regardless of the gender, the more smart phone addicted they are, the more they suffered frequent sleep disturbances and underfed, while the stress is decreased.
Fourth, stronger smart phone addiction showed that the more the number of participants were using smartphone while eating. Females compared to males, showed that higher intake of snacks while using smartphone. Most students prefer snacks and beverages, and most of students felt hungry and did habitual snack intakes while using smart phone.
Fifth, students got more dietary information through the smart phones than computer. In particular, Females contacted information on the diet frequently but reliability and overall satisfaction was not high. It is because they are aware of that reliability problem on frequent Internet advertising and that it is difficult to actually apply on their real lives.
Survey on daily intake rate and amount(g) of foods, which is devided into six foods groups, according to gender and smartphone addiction status of high school students, shows that; - Male group tends to have excessive intake of sugars and animal protein due to juice and ice cream but have lesser intake of vegetables and fruit. - Female group tends to have insufficient intake of animal protein, vegetables and fruit.
Based on these results, it is necessary to warn seriousness of smart phone overuse and provide right guidance on proper food habit. In addition, it should foster educational surroundings that students can pick out information from vast knowledge regarding dietary life which is learned from smart phone themselves. Besides, it is essential to study on new educational tools on nutrition, such as smartphone applications by taking advantage of the characteristics of smartphone- mobility and accessibility.
