This study investigated the nutrient removal characteristics of an membrane bioreactor (MBR). The MBR consisted of anoxic, anaerobic and aerobic reaction processes in series. As the C/N ratio of the influent was 4.1 ㎎/L, the removal efficiency of total nitrogen (T-N) was 72%. As the C/P ratio was 48.4 ㎎/L, the removal efficiency of total phosphorus (T-P) was the highest at 90%. Even though the C/N and C/P ratios were increased up above 4.1 ㎎/L and 48.43㎎/L, the removal efficiency gave no significant difference as no additional external organic carbons were needed in these operating conditions. As hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 14 hrs, the removal efficiency of T-N and T-P were 76% and 90%, respectively. From these results, we could infer that when HRT was 14 hrs, the nitrification rate of aerobic tank was highest. In addition, the removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P based on the internal return flow rate of 1.4 Q were 75% and 90%, respectively. As the internal return flow rate was increased, the removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P were gradually deteriorated; these results might be due to the lack of enough detention time for denitrification microbes' growth in the anaerobic tank. As the F/M ratio was 0.03 kgBOD5/kgMLSS․day, the best removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P could be obtained. Finally, as the concentration of MLSS was increased the permeation flux was decreased and the permeation pressure was increased. From the operating data at the full-scale bioreactor system, the optimal MLSS concentration should be maintained at 7,000∼8,000 mg/L.
