The cultural capability and sophistication in arts of a country serve as the source of national pride. As the importance of culture and art as a major driving force in contemporary society is being emphasized, various efforts are being made on the national level to put in place institutions to promote art and culture while providing the financial assistance needed. However art-related organizations in Korea have a high dependency on public funds which are in general not sufficient. There are also issues inherent in the method of the public sector-driven art and culture projects, such as inefficiency in fostering the vision or running specific support projects. To overcome these constraints, support from the private sector needs to be expanded. Since voluntary donations by individuals are rare in Korea, the role of private cultural foundations is all the more important. To promote independent creative activities in the field of art and culture in response to these restraints, continuous research needs to be conducted on identifying measures to promote private foundations in the field. However, to date, it is difficult to acquire a set of data that show the overall situation of private cultural foundations in the country. As such, this paper seeks to compile and analyze data on the role of private cultural foundations, the current status on their projects, and to recommend more in-depth empirical studies on the matter. In order to investigate the current status of projects in the field of art and culture implemented by private foundations, data on non-profit organizations and specialized foundations and organizations in the field of art were first collected. Based on the data listed by the Ministry of Culture and Sport both online and offline, non-profit organizations that are governed by the Ministry or the Office of Cultural Assets amount to a total of 1316 organizations, of which foundations are 290 (22.04%). By field, non-profit organizations in culture or arts accounted for the most at 612 organizations (46.9%). There were 119 foundations(9.04%) in the field of art and culture. There are a total of 4005 non-profit organizations including those approved by the local government (that is, organizations for which the local government has licensed or cancelled their establishment, approved of their change in organization rules or organizations whose management authority have been consigned to local governments including mayors, governors or special autonomy governors). Of them, foundations count 1027. Excluding the data that overlap with those on non-profit organizations governed by the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Office of Cultural Assets, non-profit organizations in the field of culture and art count a total of 1770 organizations and 409 foundations (23.1%). The white paper on specialized art-related organizations show that there are 58 specialized organizations in the form of foundations (the white paper lists them as 58 but in reality there are 65 organizations). Of them, support organizations or other organizations account for the most at 38 (65.5%), followed by 9 performance groups (15.5%), 9 performance venue management organizations (15.5%) and 2 exhibition planning or venue management organizations (3.5%). It must be taken into account that there may be some overlapping in these data due to a lack of updating on the number of cultural foundations out of the total non-profit organizations. The data on cultural foundations currently in operation in Korea were collected through the current status records of the Ministry of Culture and Sports as well as the white paper on social contribution issued by the Korean Federation of Industries, research papers published by the Art Management Support Center and Surim Cultural Foundation and internet searches. The foundations were then categorized into those who are members of the Korean Federation of industries and those who are not. While there are approximately 100 cultural foundations in Korea engaged in projects in the field of art and culture, there are not a lot of data that are public. The findings of the research within the constraints of limited data are as follows. There are a total of 68 cultural foundations, including 15 who are members of the Korean Federation of Industries. Compared to the 48 public cultural foundations (on the national and local government levels), it appears that there are much more cultural foundations established in the private sector, especially if those that are missing from the data are included. The 15 cultural foundations that are members of the Korean Federation of Industries operate 36 projects, of which 21 are run as independent projects and 14 are run as part of support for external parties. The total budget for projects run by the 15 cultural foundations amount to 157,527,610,000 Korean Won. Of this, the project budget for the art and cultural fields is set at 90,346,160,000 Korean Won. This accounts for 57% of the total project budgets. The internally secured budget is approximately 78 billion Won while 12 billion Won is from donations. The budget to run their proper projects accounted for 86% of the total budget of the organizations. Most foundations with a big budget were operating venues such as performance halls or museums. Project costs that support all genres of art accounted for 49.2% of the total budget. Next, visual arts had a budget of 34 billion Won, the highest of all categories. Therefore, even when categorized by the type of operation, the budget for running exhibitions or exhibition halls accounted for 43.1% (38,923,471,512 Korean Won), the highest of all categories. There were no cultural foundations that were members of the KFI that supported dance in terms of genre or festivals in terms of project type. In the category of non-member cultural foundations, 53 cultural foundation
