Carbon fibers with good mechanical properties have been prepared from linear low density polyethylene(LLDPE) fiber. Precursor fibers were prepared from LLDPE by dry-wet spinning. The effect of take-up speed on dry-wet spinning and hot-drawing process was studied using optical microscope, X-ray diffraction(XRD), and mechanical properties. Tensile strength of precursor fibers could be improved by high take-up speed(15.6m/min) and hot-drawing process(draw ratio 5). The precursor fibers were treated with sulfuric acid by various temperatures, different time periods, and stresses. The effect of cross-linked fibers on the conversion process was studied using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), elemental analysis(EA), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS), color change, scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and single filament mechanical properties. The precursor fibers became infusible by treatment with sulfuric acid. The applied stress had a major role to tensile property improvement during the process of cross-linking. The cross-linked fibers were carbonized at 950℃ under stress between 0.15 and 0.3MPa, in a nitrogen atmosphere, for 3min. The carbon fiber with the best mechanical properties could be obtained using the cross-linked fiber with the highest tensile modulus. Carbon fiber carbonized at applied stress 0.25MPa had a tensile strength of 1.65GPa and a tensile modulus of 110GPa.
