Gary Willis is a bassisst known as the co-founder of the band Tribal Tech with guitarist Scott Handerson and has worked vigorously over 90's. He has been trying various musical approaches combining theories from jazz and sound of rock. This paper describes analysis of five pieces composed by him as a bassist of Tribal Tech which reveal his unique fingering style. The pieces are as follows; ‘Self Defence’ from 「Nomad, 1990」, ‘Babylon’ from 「Illicit, 1992」, ‘Dence Dance’ from 「Tribal Tech (self titled album), 1991」, ‘Canine’ from 「Face First, 1993」, ‘Nite Club’ from 「Reality Check, 1995」. In this paper also represents application of Gary Willis style fingering to instrumental pieces of Jaco Pastorius, a pioneer of a solo bassist using only 2-finger picking. 4 pieces was chosen among his countless works; ‘Elegant People’ from 「Black Market, 1976」, ‘Teen Town’, ‘Havona’ from 「Heavy Weather, 1977」 and 「Mr. Gone, 1978」. Also it has been applied on the author's work, 'Crush'. The analysis is mainly about revealing disadvantages caused by former existing 2-finger picking and suggesting reasonable fingering mechanism properly adjustable for various roles on playing. First of the advantages from Gary's fingering style is cross picking which helps making uniform tone and stability while playing 5- or 6-string bass. Also it enables expression of wide scale by making it easy to skip strings while playing. Second, palm mute technique can be easily applied to control the length of the notes after fingering and thumb fingering makes it easier to reproduce fat and blunt sound of acoustic bass. Palm mute can also be used in this case without changing tone or angle of the fingers. Third, the biggest feature is the small attack volume which gives audiences even better sound. The smaller vibration amplitude of the string gives better condition for continuous fingering. Fourth, same notes at different strings ar played to mix their own tones. In this manner equal notes with different tones are mixed to make more reasonable fingering. Lastly, solo playing with rich tone is possible with octave technique, playing two notes sequentially. This paper shall be helpful for the bassists to study about various fingering style and find out their own unique style.
