「Piano Sonata Hob. XVI: 43」은 고전주의 소나타 형식에 관한 하이든의 실험 정신이 반영된 대표적인 중기 작품이다.

Franz Joseph Haydn(1732-1809) along with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756-1791) and Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827) is a representative composer of the eighteen-century classicism in Austria. As a prolific composer, Haydn wrote numerous works in the genres of symphonies, string quartets, concertos, oratorios, operas, masses, and keyboard sonatas. While his outstanding achievements in the symphonies gave him the nickname “the father of symphony,” his keyboard works received far less attention than the works by Mozart or Beethoven. However, he composed the keyboard sonatas throughout his lifetime and carried out various experiments arriving at a mature style of the form. His development of the sonata form won him a core place among the Classical composers. It has been actually uncertain how many keyboard sonatas were composed by Haydn and in what years he composed each of them; this vagueness has brought different suggestions from the scholars who attempted to chronicle Haydn’s works. Firstly, this study briefly described Haydn’s life, and compared and organized the different opus numbering systems. Haydn’s keyboard sonatas are categorized into three, early, middle, and late periods, according to the time of composition. The works corresponding to each category were organized in a chronological order with the information on the characteristics of composition, the tonal relationships among movements, and the tempo markings for each movement. This thesis provides a detailed study on 「Piano Sonata Hob. XVI: 43」, a work of the composer’s middle period. In each movement, the musical elements of Haydn’s unique compositional language such as thematic and formal structures, applications of major motives, tonal relationships, and accompaniment patterns are studied. 「Piano Sonata Hob. XVI: 43」 is a representative work which demonstrates Haydn’s experiments regarding a Classical sonata form.
