As the public awareness toward environmental problems and the interest regarding the influence of architectural space environment on health have been raising up from 1990s, eco-friendly construction has become an issue. Accordingly, the green building certification criteria was enforced from January, 2002. Currently, certification creteria for apartments, residential complexes, office buildings, school facilities, commercial buildings, and accommodations are in place. School facilities were certified from February, 2005, and it provided an opportunity for eco-friendly construction of school facilities. Demand for echo-friendly construction is requested for every type of buildings. In case of school buildings, echo-friendly planning is concenturated on reducing energy consumption and evironmental load. It also signifies that school construction itself becomes a sustainable learning field for promoting interests on evironmetal problems and energy consumption to the next generation members of our society to be properly prepared for the future. This study investigated the best practices of eco-friendly planning strategies for school facilities in other countries including U.S. and Japan, and suggested improvement plans for Korean eco-frendly school buildings by comparing the practices of different countries. Our findings are as follows: 1. Regarding outdoor environment in U.S., there were many cases of retaining eco-friendly learning facilities including roof garden and biotop for educational purposes. However, many Korean schools do not have echo-friendly learning facilities even though they were included in planning stage. Schools in U.S. installed turf grounds and sprinklers to reduce dust and prevent ground pollution. In Korea, sprinklers are planned to be installed to reduce dust in grounds paved with soil cement. 2. To use natural energy resources, most schools devised daylighting and ventilation by positioning southern facing courtyards between buildings. In U.S., there were many cases of maximizing daylighting by actively using top lights, clearstories, monitor roofs, and ventilation towers and improving indoor air quality by smoothing natural ventilation. By contrast, Japanese and Korean schools do not have facilities like top lights, clearstories, or monitor roofs due to the properties and the sizes of the building sites. In Japan, ventilation tower facility using ventilation path called the path of wind is recently planned in many schools. Most schools are equipped with folding shading devices. However, light-shelves are only used in some of the schools. 3. For reducing energy load, there were multiple cases of expecting thermal insulation using green roof systems and reducing energy load using double low-e glazing windows or insulation vacuum glazing windows. In Korea, the importance of reducing energy load is being emphasized and activities such as installing insulation material thicker than standard, thickening insulation thickness of low-e glazing windows, using insulation frames and triple glazed windows were planned or carried out. Air-conditioning systems using exhaust heat recovery devices are also used for enery load reduction. 4. For materials and resources, rainwater is used for landscape irrigation or gray water system in all the Korean and foreign schools. Eco-frendly and recycled construction materials and water saving facilities using water saving taps and waterless toilets are also used in many schools. 5. For indoor environment, while schools in U.S. and Japan tried to improve the indoor air quality using natural light source or maximizing ventilation effect, efforts of schools in Korea seemed insufficient. Korean schools tries to reinforce the indoor air quality control using mechanical systems due to the sizes of the spaces and difficulties in maintenance. 6. For indoor finishing materials, eco-friendly materials and wood with little chemical discharges were used and ventilation systems were automatically operated using CO2 sensors. It proves that eco-friendly construction in Korea is still not very active compared to other countries. 7. Measuring CO2 concentration revealed that CO2 concentrations in five schools exceeded the standard (1000 ppm). The maximum CO2 concentration in class 1 of A elementary school exceeded 3.7 times more than the standard. CO2 concentration increased in the afternoon in accordance with the number of people in classrooms. We determine that efforts for maintenance and guidelines are needed in addition to the initial certification criteria. 8. Measuring formaldehyde concentration for each school showed that concentrations exceeded 1.7 to 10 times more than the guidline of 0.1 ppm (24 hour) provided by the law Indoor air quality management for multiplex use facilities. In D school which was established 4 years ago, concentration reduction effect was observed since formaldehyde concentration was 54% of average concenturation. However, it still exceeded 4.3 times more that the guideline and active planning and comprehensive examination were required for reducing formaldehyde concentration. 9. In energy evalutions for schools, daylighting was seldomly applied in passive aspects and natural ventilation was never observed. Eco-friendly indoor finishing materials were used since it is obligated. However, constant CO2 concentrations exceeded the standard with consideration of passive aspects. 10. When energy evaluation was actively observed, ventilation system were automatically operating window never installed and combustion gas prevention system and indoor acostic and noise control system were only used in special purpose classrooms. We determine that additional guidelines for energy and indoor air quality evaluations for Korean school buildings. Currently, various eco-friendly construction strategies are applied in Korean schools responding to constant promotion and legislation of relavent laws. Although eco-friendly school fac
