A Study on Development of Fusion Up-style by Applying the Hair Style of Women in Buddhist Paintings Lim, Soo-Bin Dept. of Beauty Arts The Graduate School of Seokyeong University Directed by Professor Park, Eun-Jun The purpose of this study is to suggest some fusion up-style designs with the motif of women’s hair style in Buddhist paintings. The result of this study may be useful in the beauty field as a design material of modern significance based on the Korean traditional beauty culture rather than the western beauty culture. For this work, the Buddhist paintings were chosen as the research subject. The theoretical background of such choice is first explained. This part includes the explanation of basic concepts such as types, characters and authors of the Buddhist paintings along with the historical and traditional features according to their ages and statuses. The reason why the Buddhist paintings were chosen is because they have continuously reflected the every age from the introduction of Buddhism in 3 Kingdom Ages till Joseon Dynasty. As the change of Korean traditional hair style has been studied by focusing on the folk paintings of late Joseon Age, there have been many defects up to now. But, we cannot find the problems in the Buddhist paintings. To digest smoothly this kind of suggested theoretical method, the author armed logically with the achievements of former scholars and collected diverse Buddhist art materials, comprehending and analyzing them. The collection of Buddhist art materials was the most emphasized part in the work. The category of Buddhist art material included not only paintings but also craft works, relieves of stone pagodas and sculptures with any Buddhist elements. But, the majority was paintings. Of the paintings, the most helpful was the painting collection of 40 volumes published by Sungbo Cultural Heritage Institution. In addition, published by Joong-Ang Daily, by Sigongsa, and written by Gang Wubang and Kim Seunghee were the decisive materials to form the basis of this study. These materials clearly showed that the Korean classical hair style began to suffer a great change since United Silla. It also showed that the hair style before then was the Korean indigenous one. It is because the two hair styles had clear difference in their forms. The change during United Silla meant that Sayeogwanbog was first given from Tang Dynasty. Since then till the late Joseon Age, Sayeogwanbog was made whenever a new dynasty was established in China. Due to it, Korean classical hair styles came to have complex elements. Buddhist paintings clearly show these historic and traditional contexts. In Joseon Dynasty, Buddhism seemed to have declined because of the policy to suppress Buddhism and promote Confucianism. But, in fact, it permeated into multitudes to form the basis of traditional culture. The Buddhist paintings drawn in this age show much more diverse patterns than folk paintings. This fact gives the validity to the choice of Buddhist paintings. For the fusion work, the theoretical research should be carried out first. After then, it is necessary to select the motif. It is to decide the expression target and to set up the atmosphere before entering the fusion work. It includes the process that the typical hair styles of each age and each social status are selected in the Buddhist paintings and reproduced first to form their images. The hair styles in the selected Buddhist paintings and the reproduced works were compared with each other and presented in a table. After this process, the design work was carried out in the way of fusion up-style. Each completed work and its production process were photographed to give the vivid feeling. For the work production, the necessary tools, materials and ornaments were selected in advance. Among them, the ornaments were imitated ones and, if the imitations could be obtained, they were directly manufactured. For all these, the Buddhist paintings became the basic reference materials. In addition, documentary materials and Chinese materials were sometimes used, too. Fusion work might well be carried out arbitrarily according to personal taste. But, it was impossible in the work based on the Buddhist paintings. As this work had the purpose to show that there are excellent traditions in Korean classical hair styles and to reproduce some fusion works based on it, the author had to show the authentic classical elements formed through the Buddhist paintings at all times. If people recognize the merits and excellences of Buddhist paintings through this study, many researchers will come to have more concerns about the field.
