Korean cosmetic distribution channels were formerly divided into sales visits and specialty shops, which made up the entire cosmetics market; however, recently the market has become much more diversified and the cosmetic distribution channels have become diversified as well. Cosmetic distribution companies have rapidly developed while the limited offline channels of the 20th century have expanded online as well during the 21st century. Cosmetic distribution channels are currently much more varied than other industries and include department stores, duty-free shops, multi-level, specialty shops, TV, the Internet, pharmacies, dermatology clinics, skin care shops, in-flight sales, and sales visits. Thus, research for this study focused on the usage and purchase situations for cosmetic distribution channels depending on cosmetic type perception and intent to purchase cosmetics by cosmetic distribution channel in order to provide a precise cognitive background of consumers regarding cosmetic distribution channels in order to procure competitiveness of those channels and to investigate causal relationships between these variables. These were the purposes of this study. To achieve these purposes, the research model and hypotheses were derived through literature research on the cosmetics industry, cosmetic distribution channels and consumers’ intent to purchase. A survey of female consumers in their 20s was implemented from September 1st to 14th, 2014 for empirical testing. 468 out of 500 surveys were collected, and a total of 415 were used for analysis while the others with unreliable responses were excluded. The SPSS 21.0 program was used for analysis of materials. Empirical testing results can be summarized as follows. Firstly, department stores had a more positive perception than other channels in terms of trust in quality, function, aftercare, assessing consumers’ demands, adding to self-esteem, ease of acquiring information, and word of mouth, but had the lowest positive perception in terms of reasonable pricing. Aside from this, there were changes in perception depending on residence for department stores and intent to purchase was high among female consumers in their 50s and up. Secondly, road shops were perceived very positively in terms of reasonable prices, ease of acquiring information, and word of mouth, but were perceived most poorly in regard to features. They had high positive perception and high intent to purchase among women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Thirdly, online cosmetics shopping malls were perceived poorly in terms of trust in quality, features and adding to self-esteem, and had the lowest positive perception and lowest intent to purchase among female consumers in their 50s and up. Fourthly, positive perception of reasonable prices in sales visits was low and female consumers in their 20s in particular had low positive perception and intent to purchase; there were also differences in perception and intent to purchase depending on consumers’ monthly income. Fifthly, drugstores rated low in terms of positive perception of reasonable prices and ease of acquiring information, with especially low positive perception and intent to purchase among female consumers in their 50s and up. In contrast, positive perception and intent to purchase were high among female consumers in their 20s. Sixthly, positive perception of TV home shopping in terms of trust in quality and features was low, but was not much influenced by demographic characteristics. Therefore, the overall conclusion to this study is that there is a relationship between perception of cosmetic distribution channels and intent to purchase. The above research results may stimulate establishment of marketing implications and business strategies for major cosmetic distribution channels and may be used as basic research material when establishing marketing strategies to promote cosmetic distribution and consumption. Since this study was limited by sample ratios, classification of distribution channels and cosmetic types, it is limited in terms of interpreting the overall cosmetics market. Thus, it is hoped that future research will be expanded to updated sample ratios and a greater number of distribution channels to cover all types of cosmetics, including hair products, body products, foundation cosmetics, and color cosmetics.
