The establishment of iodine database for common Korean foods and associations between iodine intake and thyroid disease in Korean adults원문보기

Recently, more attention has been paid in iodine intake and thyroid disease because the prevalence of thyroid disease has been increased. The purpose of this study is to developing iodine database using the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2007~2009 for the selection of common Korean food and study the association between iodine intake and thyroid disease in Korean adults. Among 667 foods, 234 were matched iodine values from published data and 291 were imputed from calculated values, and 142 were assigned as zero. The mean iodine intake of men was higher than women and the iodine contribution of seaweed was 64.5%, 66.6%, respectively and that was the highest in both sex. The top 5 major food of iodine intake were seaweeds except the Kimchi. When the subjects were divided to extreme group that the iodine intake was higher than the UL and quintile groups to examine the nutrient intake according to iodine intake level, the nutrient intake of high iodine intake group was significantly high. And in the iodine contribution according to food groups, the contribution of seaweed in extreme group and Q5 group was 93.0% and 66.4%, respectively. In extreme group, the serum triglyceride and fasting blood glucose were significantly high and the PTH was significantly low compared to Q1 group. The risk for thyroid disease in Q1 group was significantly increased about 56% compared to other groups when adjusting for age, BMI, sex, income, education, residual area, drinking, smoking, physical activity, eating out and energy intake. In the 25 thyroid cancer study subjects, the mean iodine intake was 415.8 ㎍ and that was lower than the intake of Korean adults. The iodine intake per 1,000 kcal of thyroid cancer study subjects was 276.0 ㎍ and that was similar to iodine intake of Q4 group. In the food groups, the iodine contribution of seaweed was the highest and the top 5 major food of iodine intake were seaweeds except the Kimchi. In this study, the iodine intake and thyroid disease in Korean adults has the association. Further studies are needed to explore the guidelines of iodine intake for reduce thyroid disease risk and meal consists.
