ABSTRACT A Transition of Jeju Taekwondo Competition Song, Moon Chul Graduate School of Korea National Sport University Department of Physical Education The purpose of this study is to explore the process of transition of Taekwondo competitions in Jeju Island, providing the base data by establishing the cultural identity of Jeju Taekwondo and the historical system. Taekwondo creates something new, fusing the cultural distinctiveness as well as its own culture. This study looks at the transition of Taekwondo competition in Jeju Island, and uses references such as literature and articles on the progress of Taekwondo competition's transition. In this study, interviews from the doyen, the executives and the players who trained and popularized early Taekwondo, are consulted to review the extant historical evidence of the literature. The contents of this thesis are outlined below. The introduction of Taekwondo in Jeju Island took place under Dae-shik Moon in June, 1954. Since June, 1955, Taekwondo was popularized by the six major Gwan(館), Changmugwan, Gangdeogwon, Cheongdogwan, Odogwan, Jidogwan, and Songmugwan. Changmugwan was the biggest among them and it had a considerable impact on the spread of Jeju Taekwondo. Second, Jeju Taekwondo Association(濟州跆拳道協會) was founded in July 17th, 1957. The association won the Korean National Sports Festival three times since it gained approval from Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Sports Council. It also has made great achievements such as establishing the Jeju Taekwondo hall funded by Korean residents in Japan, inviting the 15th World Championship as well as the Jeju Pyeonghwa National Athletic Meeting. It also published The Jeju Taekwondo History of 50 Years. Third, this Jeju sports team has turned out many excellent members of the national team since 1982, including Seung-hwa Jang, who is the first member of the national team. It results from the sacrifice from the early leaders, invitation the national Changmugwan retreat and the Referees' institute in Jeju, the intensified training for the Korean National Sports Festival, the intense recruitment and fostering future prospects, and from the founding of the Taekwondo team in Jeju National University and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. As a result, they affected the expansion of Taekwondo in Jeju. Because of this, Jeju Taekwondo has become the center of the Jeju Sports. Fourth, the fostering of Jeju's Taekwondo team started from the early 1960's. There are Taekwondo clubs in Ohyun High School, Namnyeong High School, and Yeongju High School in Jeju City and a Taekwondo club is in Namju High School in Seoguipo city. Linkages began to be fostered in 1972 from the Taekwondo Team in Jeju National University's College of Education. The middle school Taekwondo team was founded to prepare for the 32nd National Junior Sports Festival in the year 2000. Fifth, Jeju Taekwondo has developed its own distinct characteristics that differ from other areas. However, the Jeju Taekwondo Association has a fragile internal stability due to its focus on competition results, as well as a decreasing number of athletes. To resolve these problems, the Jeju Taekwondo Association needs to distinguish between competition and daily practice. It also needs to professionalize the organization by hiring professionals, as well as put new leaders in place to replace older teachers that are about to enter retirement. Finally, it is time to revitalize Taekwondo sports and systemize future recruitment by founding Taekwondo clubs in elementary schools. Thereafter, athletes may be fostered throughout schools and share a link between professional teams.
