A study of the Understanding of Multicultural Society and Missiological Approach: Divine Inclusiviness Embracing Multiple Identies원문보기
통합이 다중적인 정체성이 조화를 이룬 상태(both A and b)라고 한다면 주변화는 그 어떤 것에도 뿌리 내리지 못하고 부유하는 상태(neither A nor B)이다.

A Study of the Understanding of Multicultural Society and Missiological Approach: Divine Inclusiviness Embracing Multiple Identities
Jung, Hyun Kon. Major of Missiology Graduate School Presbyterian University & Theological Seminary
The debate on multiculture has been raised by the government and it is characterized by control and exclusion. Yet, an internal cultural approached is required for the formation of a healty multicultural society. A theological and missiological approach that is based on this is also demanded. This paper attempts a dialogue among social science, theology and missiology. A nation-state that has stressed clear boundaries and demands uniform identity to the people is losing its strength due to global migration. In this reality of global locality, a nation-state is being recognized as a ‘imagined communities’. Thanks to global migration and the development of information technology, we have come to live within a national boundary with those from other cultures and ethnic backgrounds. The policy of nation-state in the multicultural society has shifted from exclusion to assimilation and multiculturalism. However, multiculturalism has stopped at a parallel existence with other cultures and is becoming a ghetto, thus attracting the criticism in the West that multiculturalism has failed. The upcoming task is on how people with different culture and ethnicity can come to have a mutual encounters through interactive learning. The problem of multicultural society is not confined only to migrants. It is related to everyone living together with them. The key issue of multicultural society is identity. Identity, which is a framework through which to look at oneself and others, has become very important in multicultural society. Identity in nation-state is given by authority and is of something that is fixed. However, identity in multicultural society is a process of strategic selection in the midst of fluid circumstances. In a multicultural society in which people live in a foreign land while maintaining a connection with their home country, they acquire multiple identities. The acculturation strategy of those with multiple identities can be categorized largely into integration, assimilation, division, and marginalization. If integration is a state of harmony of multiple identities (both A and B), marginalization is a state of floating that is not rooted in anything (neither A nor B). The identity of marginalization has a greater potential for destructive behaviors, which necessarily calls for preventive measures. Christian theology seeks a new possibility of creation from such floating state. God created a beautiful world from chaos and enacted a new history of resurrection through death on the cross. If one does not have a clear identity, a identity will have to be chosen, eventually moving toward acknowledging the two identities. The process of acculturation of identity in multicultural society moves from a period of floating (neither A nor B) in which one does not belong to either the home country or the country of residence to a period of settlement (either A or B) and to multiple identities where one acknowledges the identity of one’s origin (both A and B). A supra-cultural meta-value, which supports multiple identity, is required. The Kingdom of God proclaimed by Jesus Christ is an inclusive and transcendental identity supporting and encompassing multiple identity (beyond A and B). The multicultural mission we propose is NEBB (Neither, Either, Both, Beyond) mission in which the transcendental value of the Kingdom of God imparts divine creativity as well as embracing multiple identity. Two main questions, which this paper seeks to answer, are: firstly, if the main agenda of multicultural society is identity, how is identity manifested in multicultural society?; secondly, what is the theological and missiological response to the acculturation of identity that occurs in multicultural society. Under this topic and context, this paper is organized as follows. In the first chapter, space is allowed for raising problems, motive and purpose of this study, history of research, methodology, outline, definitions, and intended outcome. The second chapter examines the phenomenon of migration and globalization, which has spread migration worldwide. We seek to approach multicultural society in terms of exclusivism, assimilationism, multiculturalism and interculturalism. The cultural aspects of multicultural era will be addressed with regard to cultural diversity, transnationality, multiple identity, cultural hybridity, and acculturation. Chapter three will look at the Bible with the agenda of multicultural society found in chapter two. The Old and New Testaments also have migration and multiculture as their background. Principles for multicultural society are sought by examining how God’s revelation came about and how the people of God lived in their multicultural society. In chapter four, we engage with theological work in order to support multiple identity, which is the central agendum of multicultural society. This chapter contains considerations on divine inclusiveness as people of the trascendental Kingdom of God that can embrace multiple identity. Miroslav Volf has sought the basis for the Christian inclusiveness from the mode of existence of the triune God and from the openness of self manifested in the cross of Christ. Based on the Trinity and the principle of the Gospel rooted in the cross, we reflect theologically on how the Church has to settle in multicultural society as the principle of the Gospel. The identity as people of God’s Kingdom, extended catholicity, and kenosis will be offered as the theological principles for multicultural society. In chapter five, we suggest missiologically practical principles suitable for the multicultural era based on such cultural, biblical and theological reflections and propose a switch from geographical mission to non-geographical one, from contextualization to acculturation, and from occupational missionary to migrant missionary. There will have to be evangelism appropriate to multicultural society through mission of presence, incarnational mission, justice-pursuing mission, and common mission by life of embracement, and the image of mission in multicultural society is to be friendship and becoming friends. Moreover, we will also look at what roles world churches in countries like Canada, Australia, and Germany have taken, which have experienced multicultural society earlier. Chapter six will examine the traits and tasks in the multicultural society of Korea. Due to the historical experiences in the modern Korean history, Chinese Koreans make up the largest group among the migrants and they go through different acculturation of identity than non-Korean migrants. It has been revealed by a psychological study that the identity of Koreans encountering such migrants is associated with egoism and interdependents concepts. We will seek how the Korean Church with the Gospel of divine inclusiveness can suggest specific and timely missiological tasks in the unique multicultural circumstances. The Korean Church is to take on the missiological role demanded by the global multicultural society by establishing international mission network through diaspora Koreans and missionaries. In chapter seven, this paper will be concluded with a summary of the research and suggestions for further studies.
