Discussion about Yi Chung-Jun’s work have focused on relatively fragmentary issues such as the study of an individual piece of one of his works, the study of novels that were published in a certain period, or the study of the main theme of his work which was prominently featured in a certain period. However, there are discussions about the totality of Yi Chung-Jun’s works. However, recently there have been many studies that were for the purpose of understanding the totality of his work rather than just a piece of his work. In order to understand the totality of the writer’s work this paper will focus on Yi Chung-Jun’s consciousness as a writer and the salvation of the human race that was frequently discussed in his work. Yi Chung-Jun often expressed his purpose as a writer is to find possibility of salvation of the human race. It has been found in many of his prose and conversation that he expressed his point of view on his work between the 1970s and 2000s. Therefore, the main theme of his work is essentially salvation of the human race, and this paper would refer to it as salvation theory. Yi Chung-Jun’s salvation theory seems to have close ties to the Buddhist’s salvation. However, he has a tendency to interpret it as Christian’s salvation, and this should be rejected. Yi Chung-Jun always believed that the most ideal way to save the human race is ultimately for people themselves to find their own way to salvation and not depend on God. This is opposite to the Christian’s salvation which depends on God more passively, but parallels the Buddhist’s salvation which promotes people finding salvation themselves. There are two types of salvation theory. First, it is a theory that people can save themselves by continuous writing for themselves. Second, it is a theory that is more of a broad type in that people save not only themselves but also others. These two types of salvation theories show how his work is related to those theories. The first one is related to his own experiences. He experienced and learned death of a person, poverty and destruction of symbolic order, so he can’t be free from these existential problem. thus, he was seeking salvation himself. In the second on, method or surface of salvation that is displayed in the Yi Chung-Jun’s work is a close relationship with the writer consciousness that wants to function as one of the model to the reader, this can be understood as an extension of the ritual self salvation. These salvation theories reflect on his novel; depending on the specific aspects of human salvation appears in the novel his work could be divided as four phases. The first is the period up to the mid-1970s from the Yi Chung-Jun in the debut year of 1965, and the second is the time of the mid-1970s to the early 1980s, and the third is the time from the mid-1980s until the early 1990s, and the fourth is since the mid-early 1990s until 2008. In his first phase a his work shows that it is premature phase of his salvation idea because any of his works can describe specific ideas of salvation but it contained more of the writer’s recognition of the reality negatively. His novel would have novelists, artists, scholars, artisans, abnormal persons or disabled persons and all tried to solve the problems in their lives but all failed. This shows how much his work is related to his experience of death, poverty, and destruction of symbolic order. The novels that were written in the second phase of his work, do not have characters that are incapable of saving themselves from the horrible reality, rather the novels have characters whose are seeking ways to find salvation in their reality aggressively. Here, the way to find the salvation means to find a place or time of salvation. The novels that were written in the first phase are Your Paradise, Ieo-do and more, and the second phases novels would be The Unflowing River, The Gate of Time. The novels of this time, However, the characters are taken of their way to solve the problem of temporal human salvation but these two phases had a limit in that all of the stories never found an actual way to save the people. He started to point out the limitation of the ways to salvation in his early work but also he suggested other ideas in his third phase. His idea of salvation finally lapsed with the Buddhist’s idea of salvation in this phase as well. All of his works that were written in this phase reflects that his idea of salvation is based on the Buddhist’s vision due to it’s resemble to it. There are Dialog with a Great Old Tree, Flowing Mountain, Ari-ari-gang-gang, In-gan-in and more, and especially In-gan-in is the most prominent piece of work since it shows both the first two phases’ limitations and it also has some kind of resolution for salvation that was based on Buddhism. Now, the fourth phase’s novels extended the issues of the previous phases and moreover it discusses the after lives of people by using myths. Unfortunately, the most important work in this phase which is The Age of Myths is left unfinished so the discussion of the fourth phase’s work should be considered incomplete. Finally, Yi Chung-Jun’s work can be divided into separate issues based on his thoughts on salvation and his specific suggestions to save people for salvation. His work in different phases shows that his main theme of work is find a way to save people. The study of his main theme leads us to understand and give us some insights into his novels.
