During their rapidly changing global economic environment, many companies are differentiating the country of origin (COO) for their brand and production in order to gain predominance in competition by reducing the cost. Consequently, the researches on COO effect also have expanded from one-dimensional to multidimensional ones. However, as the developing country such as China began to launch its brands with production plant in developed countries like Europe or USA, the past brand and production COOs have begun to reverse. Therefore, further research is essential for understanding such phenomenon. In this study, unlike the past literatures, the developing country was chosen as a brand’s COO. More specifically, the COO combination was divided into the following three cases for analysis. First, within the ‘positive incongruence’ case, brand’s COO was China and production’s COO was the country with more positive COO image compared to China. Secondly, the ‘congruence’ case meant that COOs for both brand and production were China. Thirdly, the ‘negative incongruence’ case was when brand’s COO was China and production’s COO was the country with less positive COO image than China. Then the influence of COO combination and prior knowledge level on product evaluation was examined. As a result, the ‘positive incongruence’ case in COO combination was found to have the most positive effect on product evaluation. The ‘congruence’ case was next to follow, and ‘negative incongruence’ case had the least positive influence. Moreover, the moderating role of prior knowledge level was verified. When the prior knowledge was sufficient, the product evaluation did not differ significantly between each case of COO combination. But when the prior knowledge was lacking, the most positive product evaluation arose from ‘positive incongruence’ case while the least positive product evaluation resulted from ‘negative incongruence’ case. The result of this study is contrary to the previous works’ finding that COO effect is larger when the COO combination is congruent than when it is incongruent. Such difference most likely have resulted from the previous researchers assigning only developed countries for both COOs of brand and production in congruence case and assigning developing country for production’s COO in incongruence case. Thus this study developed the understanding of COO effect by expanding the types of COO combination and providing practical implications for developing countries trying to enhance one’s competitiveness in the world market.
