Recent trend in mathematics education is trying to break the stereotype of mathematics subject as relentless repetition of formula and skills and suggesting a new perspective of mathematics developing ʻMathematical Powerʼ in extensive fields (NCTM). For instance, instead of a set of repetitive mathematical questions, mathematical power emphasize on a ʻgame like mathematical curriculumʼ which will naturally motivate students and extend their mathematical knowledge, process technique, and positive attitude on mathematics through a natural and informal way. Moreover, to promote and support childʼs mathematical thinking process it is necessary to combine teachersʼ intentional teaching and the game. Thus, interest on engagement and role of a teacher in the childʼs voluntary game has been increased. For a while, various teaching method, teacher training and consults has been suggested and applied to activate mathematical education for children. However, these methods were too ordinary for innately different teachers to apply to innately different classes and children. In the research, as mentioned above, the researcher, homeroom teacher of ʻTree classʼ from ʻW Kindergartenʼ practically scanned through the realization of mathematical education in real classes and at the same time studied to develop teaching aid of childrenʼs mathematics. In other words, it was finding educational value of mathematical teaching aids by developing and applying them in real class rooms. The developing mathematical teaching aid study was held in ʻW Kindergartenʼ, ʻTree Classroomʼ which had thirty three five-year-old-children (twenty boys and thirtheen girls). It lasted for five month starting from July 11th of 2014 to November of 2014. The ʻspiral cyclical self-reflective modelʼ of Kemmis and McTaggart(2000) was used and their study steps were followed: recognition of the problem and diagnosis, searching for solution, implication of the plan and observation of the changes and result, reflection on the process and the result, observation on modified plans and application, and repetition of the reflection of the same process. While the research was held by those steps collection of data and analysis of them were also carried out. Data for the research was meaningful interaction transfer recording between teacher and the students (Tr-Ss) and students and students (Ss-Ss) in child-selected mathematical activities, reflective journal of teachers, transfer recording of dialogs among fellow teachers, photos, voice and video recording of the lesson. They were all filed according to their filmed dates or names of activities. To increase the reliability of the result,“Verification process a love triangleˮ and“Peer review processˮ which are strategies used for gaining reliability for qualitative research were used. Results of the study are as followed: First, the purpose of the research was to increase childrenʼs mathematical literacy and shape them into mathematician who can enjoy mathematics. Pretests showed big difference on the comprehension level of mathematics and attitude toward mathematics. There was a large gap and a number of negative attitude toward mathematics. However, in the end of the study the common transition among children was a change in the attitude; many of the children showed positive attitude toward mathematics itself and activities using teaching aid of the subject. Some children even showed outstanding increase in terms of gaining mathematical knowledge. Second, to activate the mathematical field and activities using teaching aid the teachers suggested improvement plans approaching from various perspectives and implemented them. They analyzed problems of activities using teaching aid and tried to find ways to improve them. Teachers also overcame the difficulties of teaching mathematics and recovered their confidence on teaching mathematics and carrying out“Childselected play activities.ˮ Awareness of problems and reflective consciousness also increased. Moreover, confidence on mathematical activities, drive on planning and implementing, finally and overall efficacy of teaching has been increased. Third, overall atmosphere of classroom has been changed. It became more liberated and alive. The change is an on-going process that it is still on. The children are happily adapting to the new atmosphere. Teacher's one-sided decision on choosing teaching aid material has been transformed to children making their own teaching material. This also has affected how children socialize with others. Not only do they get along with their best friends but also they started to socialize with other classmates. They have become very active on making new friends. Though it was a small experiment only held in“Tree Class,ˮ it was found that every small detail of events happened in the classroom are connected systematically and even a small change can make a whole lot of difference in the classroom.
