The purpose of this study is to observe mathematical situations that appear during free-choice activities of 3 year old infants and to identify what sort of mathematical experiences are achieved while they freely play, and to analyze educational meaning of them. To achieve this, Class S, an age 3 class of D kindergarten located in Seoul is visited 24 times for 9 weeks from May 19th to July 16th, 2014 and participatory observation was conducted and data was collected through it. The average duration of observation a day is 1 hour and 20 minutes from the introduction of teaching materials and tools to tidying up during the indoor free-choice activities, and observation was carried out through all interest centers of class S. The research participants were 1 teacher in charge and 18 infants, and the data collected through participatory observation such as video recording and field notes, interview with the teacher, and literature search was analyzed at the end. The research results according to the set research problems are summarized as follows. 1. How the mathematical experiences of 3 year old infants occur during the free-choice activities? Through natural play during the free-choice activities of 3 year old infants, various mathematical experiences occurred in all interest centers, and the observation results were divided into two different areas to be analyzed: knowledge of mathematical contents and mathematical experiences by interest center. Firstly, during the free-choice activities, 3 year old infants experienced all knowledge of mathematical contents of 'Understanding the basic concept of number and operations', 'Understanding the basic concept of space and figure', 'Basic measurement', 'Understanding regularity', and 'Collecting basic data & Presenting the result'. The mathematical experiences were acquired in the order of 'Understanding the basic concept of number and operations', 'Basic measurement', 'Understanding the basic concept of space and figure', 'Collecting basic data & Presenting the result', and 'Understanding regularity'. Along with such mathematical knowledge, the infants acquired mathematically processing skill of solving, deducing, presenting, and connecting problems in various mathematical situations independently or cooperatively with friends or the teacher. Secondly, the 3 year old infants obtained mathematical experiences in all interest centers of the free-choice activities. The infants had the most mathematical experiences in Number Manipulation center, and Building Game center, Role Play center, Art center, Language center, Science center, and Tone and Rhythm center followed. The most experienced knowledge of mathematical contents per each interest center is 'Understanding the basic concept of number and operations' for Number Manipulation center, Role Play center, and Art center. For Building Game center and Language center, it was 'Understanding the basic concept of space and figure', and 'Basic measurement' and 'Understanding regularity' for Tone and Rhythm center and 'Basic measurement' for Science center. 2. What is the educational meaning of mathematical experience appeared in the free-choice activities of 3 year old infants? The educational meaning of mathematical experience appeared in the free-choice activities of 3 year old infants is the expansion of mathematical experience through the factors that draw mathematical attention of infants and the problem solving process between the teacher and the infants. Firstly, the factors that draw mathematical attention of infants are as follows: mathematical experience that daily life experience is reflected upon, mathematical experience through imitation, and mathematical experience through interaction with the surroundings. Infants' mathematical interest increased through the process of sharing their thoughts as they naturally unfold mathematical situations that they have experienced in their daily lives, during the free-choice activities at the kindergarten, and it expanded to mathematical experiences. Also, they obtained mathematical experience by imitating and expressing of their friends' or teacher's mathematical situation with their words and actions. They extended their mathematical experiences through exploring, inquiring, and utilizing the materials and tools of the Number Manipulation center which changes according to subjects, and they naturally obtained mathematical experience through creative activities of connecting and integrating materials of different centers as well. Secondly, the expansion of mathematical experience through problem solving between infants and the teacher is as follows: solving problem independently, understanding problems together with friends, and understanding problems through conversation with the teacher. The infants internalized mathematical experience in the process of exploring and solving their own mathematical problems that occurred during play situations, and expanded mathematical experiences in the process of sharing their own opinions and helping others to solve mathematical problems. Also, the teacher guided them through active conversation, so that they can experience mathematical situations and helped them to learn mathematical terms. In addition, by supporting them to solve the mathematical problem contexts themselves through questions, the teacher heavily influenced the mathematical experiences of the infants.
