Among preceding studies on Choe In-hun’s parodic novels, there was no intensive study on his such somnambulant motif-applied novels as 「Guunmong」, 「Geumosinhwa」 and 「Seoyugi」 by classifying them into a group. On this account, the purpose of this study was to specifically examine Choe In-hun’s such novels as a short story of「Guunmong」, a medium-length story of 「Geumosinhwa」 and a full-length story of 『Seoyugi』 which borrowed their titles from classical somnambulant epics, thus looking into the history of his parodic novels. By borrowing the titles of original texts, the novelist implied that he would also borrow the somnambulant structure of original epics, one of most characteristic features of the novels. As the novelist’s intention was presented in the titles, somnambulant motif was presented in the texts of the novels as well. 「Guunmong」 reflected not the traditional methods of somnambulism, such as mongjaryu (夢字類) and mongyurok (夢遊錄), but Jung and Freud's theories of dream. The text of 「Guunmong」 consisted of such three chapters as Dok Go-min’s nine dreamy epics, Dr. Kim Yong-gil’s epics and Min and Suk’s epics. In the first chapter of Dok Go-min’s dreamy epics, the beginning, entangling and reversal of dream were presented. In the second chapter of Dr. Kim Yong-gil’s epics, the end of dream was seemingly delayed and the secondarily processed dream was inserted. And in the third chapter of Min and Suk’s epics, the end of dream in which the two characters encountered with was presented and allowed the whole work to be interpreted as a dream. In the first chapter, leading character Min appeared as a main agent who experienced the confusions of the times, but in the second chapter he appeared as an object who was victimized by 4.19 Revolution via the perspective of Dr. Kim Yong-gil and the head of nursing with the setting of post-4.19 Revolution. In the last chapter 3, he appeared as a future generation who could contemplate the pain of the times by regarding it as an event occurred in the remote past. The time and main agent changed freely, but all the three chapters had a common point of experiencing the heart-aching political situations of Seoul in the 1960s through the internality of characters, their networking with others, or the medium of films even for far future generations. As chapters progressed, the work made clear the fact that its perspective to view Seoul in the 1960s distantly with such background of times as the actual scene of the Revolution, the post-Revolution and the future was its principle of placing dreamy epics. Therefore, the epics of 「Guunmong」 changed from a personal ‘small dream’ to ‘a big dream’ that comprising the pain of times and nationals. This is the very implication of the whole epics of 「Guunmong」. In this vein, the aesthetic structure of placement of dream actively took part in the realization of stratified themes of the work and leading character Dok Go-min appeared as a person who taking a walk in his sleep and experiencing the tragic reality of the Peninsula in the 1960s. 「Geumosinhwa」, the second subject of examination of this study, made the most of the structure of mongyurok (夢遊錄) which daringly accused reality through surrealistic experience. Leading character A could deal with its journey enforced by the order of the party. He got off Heungnam Factory in which he worked as an ordinary member of the party, received espionage training in Pyeongyang, and then finally arrived at Imjin River to move to the South. Leading character A who was not contaminated by the socialist ideology of North Korea and therefore maintained ideological purity was a person who had the spirit of a walker who was not easily assimilated into the stream of times. He gave himself up after moving to the South and then tried to recover his life in the South. Therefore, it was noticed in advance that he would complete his walk when he realized free roaming in the South by his own initiative. However, he was killed at the moment when he was reborn as a full-fledged walker by getting off the handler of journey that was riddled with other’s will, and therefore he ended in failure. As a walker whose spirit was against the times, A realized spiritual awakening, but his concrete journey was frustrated by his death. Being killed just before realizing his will symbolized the sternness of ideology that only permitted not personal freedom but the journey of special mission assigned by the party. The end of the work that presented the appearance of an unsuccessful walker with A’s death accused the times which extremely suppressed personal freedom. At this point of time, the novelist’s critical mind against the ideological world in which there was no utopia to hope transcendence and no personal freedom to go to utopia was embodied. In addition, the situation of abolition of human possibility after their degenerating into a tool of ideology could be connected to the exhausted conception of human beings. 「Seoyugi」, the last work of examination of this study, consisted of the structure of naturalis historia in which the strata of text, thought and dream were integrated. Naturalis historia refers to a book that deals with the things or phenomena in the natural world comprehensively and systematically, and a kind of encyclopedia that has such characteristics as describing things or phenomena in detail after referring to many documents. Choe In-hun’s 「Seoyugi」 is a naturalis historia which attempts to understand the situations of history, thought and text placed around the partition of Korea comprehensively. This study divided the work into the stratum of text, the stratum of thought and the stratum of dream, and then examined the components of each stratum. First, this study looked into how the work fused such superficially clarified works as 「Seoyugi」, 「A Dog of Flanders」 and Lee Gwang-su’s 「Heuk」 and such deeply internalized works as Sin Chae-ho’s 「Ggumhaneul」, Franz Kafka’s 「Die Verwandllung」, Hegel’s 「Phenomenology of Mind」, Paul Valery’s 「Degas, Dance, Drawing」 and Jung’s theoretical books. Second, this study examined the thought of Dok Go-jun as a main agent of contacting with such ideologies as socialism, capitalism, rationalism and religionism and then carrying out methodological skepticism via the decision of ‘reservation’ that selected nothing. Third, this study looked into the perspective of dream in the work. Dok Go-jun tried to approach W City, an original place of experience of trauma in his unconsciousness, but by being swept away by repetitive dreamy situations he forgot his aim and repeated recurrence. The state of recovering the consciousness of aims in one’s unconsciousness refers to altered state of consciousness, and with this altered state of consciousness, the text of 「Seoyugi」 acquired the structure of dream in which leading character’s oblivion, self-awareness, illusion and awakening were linked. In addition, this study proposed Benjamin’s conception of collector as a category that could comprise the stratum of text, the stratum of thought and the stratum of dream. All the three works examined in this study are journey-type novels and their leading characters try to be born again as a real walker by rejecting to be assimilated into the violent ideology enforced by the times. Those characters are presented with such appearances as taking a walk in its unconsciousness in 「Guunmong」, as failing to transform into a perfect walker in 「Geumosinhwa」, and as a collector who makes a trip in the dream and collects history and thought on the reality of fatherland in 「Seoyugi」. A common appearance of the three works is a walker and one of most important concepts that penetrating the three works is love. In 「Guunmong」, the lack of love is indicated as the cause of revolutionary army’s failure, and through the kiss of Min and Suk such love that contemplates unjust political reality and even its pain of victimization is depicted. In 「Geumosinhwa」, the sorrow and resentment of leading character who has no enough energy to love due to the giddy whirl of political reality are presented. And in 「Seoyugi」, love is presented as a concept which is placed in the antipodal point of ideological accusation which makes individuals criminals according to the formula of ideology. At this time, love functions as a crucial key of overcoming trauma and achieving growth through accepting and contemplating things that cannot be loved. This conception of love can be more clearly understood by looking into Jesus’ illustration of 99 sheep and 1 sheep quoted by the writer when he clarified his motive of writing. We can read such writer’s consciousness as arithmetic love that attaches great weight to a group can be violence and personal redemption of a hurt individual by the times is the very love. The redemption is connected to love in the end and this consciousness of writer is embodied as a roaming figure as a walker in the loveless times. The refraction of political reality in the 1960s was inevitably presented with a refracted appearance in the literary works in those days. Since the methodology of realism could not easily represent the situations of the times correctly, Choe In-hun’s somnambulant novels, examined in this study, borrowed the structure of somnambulism as a novelistic methodology, and established the artistry of works, beyond simple copy of the reality of the times.
