The purpose of this study was examining elementary students' reading comprehension achievement and reading comprehension strategies with the informational texts. For this purpose, this study has set its research questions (a) examining the relationship between characteristics of informational texts and reading comprehension achievement at the elementary level, and (b) investigating reading comprehension strategies' elementary school students used during their comprehending informational texts. This study reviewed the previous literature about (a) authenticity of texts and the definition and the characteristics of informational text, (b) the definition and the characteristics of reading comprehension and the characteristics of elementary student as a reader. Considering the review, two informational texts with differentiated authenticity were selected. Elementary students were participating in the story recall test and the essay test after reading the informational texts for examining their reading comprehension achievement. Test results were statistically analyzed based on the participants' grade, gender, reading competency, and preferred text type. Students' reading comprehension strategies for informational texts were investigated with the data gathered from think-aloud and in-depth interview with twelve focal students. The results in this study suggested that the authenticity of informational texts was related to the reading competence of elementary students. Overall, reading comprehension achievement in reading informational texts was related to their grade, gender. Their preference of text type did not show significant correlation with reading comprehension achievement at elementary level. Female elementary students showed significantly higher achievement in reading comprehension than male students in general. When the authenticity of the texts was added to the analysis, however, the results showed the different aspect of elementary students' reading comprehension with informational text. A significant reading achievement gap between both genders did not exist in the analysis with the text authenticity factor. Students preferring informational text showed higher reading achievement with more authentic text while students who preferred narrative text showed higher achievement than the students who preferred informational texts when the text was less authentic. The results also showed elementary students' informational text comprehension strategies. Students used three groups of strategies: (a) setting a goal for acquiring new information, (b) extension and elaboration of meaning with the use of multimodal texts' elements, and (c) understanding and application of the sub-qualities of informational texts. Elementary students actively used comprehension strategies which helped them set a goal for acquiring and understanding new information from the text as independent readers regardless of their reading competency. Elementary students had their agency in comprehending informational texts. They used the multimodal texts' elements in their comprehension, especially when they met the informational text with higher authenticity. Elementary students also used the characteristics of sub-categories of informational text in their comprehension, which was less active than the use of first two strategies. Overall, all the students used comprehension strategies actively regardless of their reading comprehension achievement, while the number of strategies they used was different depending on the students' reading comprehension achievement. This study suggested four implications to the informational text comprehension instruction for elementary students. First, individual characteristics of elementary students in their reading are one of the important factors when studying their informational text comprehension. Second, the authenticity of the informational text should be considered as an important factor in explaining a student's reading comprehension achievement, and informational texts with various levels of authenticity and various qualities should be provided to the elementary students. Third, current tendency in informational text reading instruction which focuses on the difference between genders needs self-reflection. Fourth, critical review about the current reading achievement tests is needed, which does not consider the diverse text types in its examining. This study also suggested that elementary readers had their agency in reading comprehension rather than deficient readers. Previous studies assumed elementary students as immature readers and tried to teach them good readers' comprehension strategies. Especially, informational text reading instruction focused on comprehending the information in the text effectively only. The results of this study, however, showed that elementary students had their own comprehension strategies, and used them independently based on the situation. They also used the complex-style factors for acquiring new information, even though the new information was small, rather than focusing on using all the information in the text effectively. Elementary students' voice in this study showed their effort to be independent readers setting a goal and using various strategies in comprehending informational texts. Instruction on informational text comprehension should support elementary readers understanding the students’ efforts and providing appropriate comprehension strategies considering their needs in reading comprehension.
