(The Sound and the Fury)는 백치와 천재, 악당, 흑인하녀의 시점으로 바라본 남부 귀족가문의 몰락을 그리면서 새롭고 다양한 인물의 관점을 제공했다.

Many novels in which human psychology was comprehensively delineated were written under the influence of psychoanalysis in the modernism period. William Faulkner was one of the leading writers who wrote such novels. He, as a avant-garde author, employed multiple narrators in his novels and had a good grasp of the inner-workings of the human mind. In The Sound and the Fury, Faulkner depicts the degeneration of a Southern aristocratic family through the eyes of four first person narrators: an idiot, a genius, a villain, and an African-American maid. Especially, it was unprecedented to assign the narration of the first section of the novel to Benjamin Compson, an intellectual moron who can only express himself through babbles. Therefore, previous studies of the novel have mainly focused on applying psychoanalytical theories to explicating the mental state of Benjamin, and to delineate the similarities and differences between Benjamin and the other two brothers. These studies have underpinned their arguments with Freudian or Lacanian psychoanalysis. Whereas Freudian approaches tend to compare the characters using Freud’s psychic apparatus, Lacanian approaches utilize Lacan’s theories on imaginary order, symbolic order, and subjective destitution. In contrast to these previous studies on the novel, I apply both Freudian and Lacanian theories, which are not in discord but rather are mutually complementary, and consider the narrative sequence from the Benjamin section to the Jason section as being analogous to the human mental development, comprised of the Pre-Oedipal phase, the Oedipus complex phase, and the Post-Oedipal phase. In addition, I provide reinterpretations on several aspects of the novel, which are relevant to the thesis: the significance of the first scene in the novel as foreshadowing; correlation among the scenes of 1898, the biblical paradise, and the Pre-Oedipal phase; the psychology of Quentin in court; the comparison between Jason and Luster. It is hoped that this study may offer a new way of approaching The Sound and the Fury.
