As building structures of concrete enlarge and scale up, it becomes necessary to find ways to reduce energy consumption and Co₂ emissions. In this respect, the present study attempted to improve heat the insulation property of concrete by using hollow glass microsphere. To test its performance, this study analyzed the physical properties of insulating concrete with hollow glass microsphere and compared them with existing concretes by replacement ratio. The findings are as follows. (1) The result of slump test shows that slump increases until replacement ratio reaches up to 15% and decreases it afterward. It is assumed that the rise is due to the effect of ball bearing created by the round shape of particles of hollow glass microsphere and due to hydrophilic fumed silica coated on the surface of the round particles. However, the decrease after 20% replacement is thought to result from the increasing surface area by more use of hollow glass microsphere of micro power type. Accordingly, the decrease of slum becomes greater than increase of fluidity. 2) The result of air amount test shows that, compared to the plain type, A-type combination has 0.1∼1.8% lower; B-type combination has 0.2∼0.8% lower; and C-type combination has also 0.5∼1.6% lower air amount than that of the plain type combination, respectively. This difference is probably owing to the reduction of air amount due to flat shape of aggregates and filling effect of the fine particles of hollow glass microsphere on micropore. (3) The result of unit volume weight test shows that it decreases as replacement ratio of hollow glass micro sphere: A type 1.2∼6.7%, B type 1.8∼8.5%, C type 2.0∼7.0% lower than unit volume weight (2,316kg/m3) of the plain combination. This decrease is assumed to result from the relatively lower portion of hollow glass microsphere than the portion of the replaced aggregates, which gradually decreases the unit volume weight of the combinations with Hollow glass microsphere. (4) The result of compressive strength test shows that it increases in most of the combinations until replacement ratio reaches up to 10%. However, difference is minor, less than 5%. Furthermore, compressive strength begins to decrease afterward as the ratio increases. The decrease can be explained by insufficient bond stress between cement matrix and hollow glass microsphere due to the smooth surface of hollow glass micro sphere. (5) The result of heat conductivity test by replacement ratio shows that A, B and C type lost heat conductivity by 7.7∼24.5%, 5.5∼29.0% and 13.5∼25.8%, respectively. The heat conductivity of the entire combinations decreases as replacement ratio increases. It is assumed that its hollow structure that warps charged air and SiO₂in the thin film of hollow glass microsphere gradually decreases heat conductivity as replacement ratio increases. The investigation into the physical properties of the concretes using hollow glass microsphere brought forth the conclusion that the concrete combination (replaced) with coarse aggregate has better heat conductivity than that replaced with fine aggregates and replaced with aggregates as a whole. In the meantime, the entire replacement with aggregates is the best option in considering both compressive strength and heat conductivity.
