People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Taiwan have both advanced on their own paths of political systems and international relationships since the year of 1949. Although the political assertions upheld by the two governments are constantly contradictory, the shared cultural backgrounds have played a pivotal role in maintaining a benign Cross-Strait relationship between the two political entities. This paper will discuss the indispensable effect of cultural relationship on promoting peaceful and supportive bilateral relations, as well as to propose alternative solutions to prevent armed conflicts between the two sides. The cultural icebreaking between PRC and Taiwan dates back to 1978. Since then, both sides managed to overcome some political disagreement in the pursuit of further communication. During this period, both encountered numerous challenges in maintaining their cooperative and interactive relations, yet the trend of ameliorating bilateral relations has been promising. Among various positive factors, cultural interactions have not only assuaged the diplomatic tension but also contributed to economic reciprocity between the two governments. The turning point of the Cross-Strait relationship was in 2008, when cooperations in business and bilateral trades accelerated the establishment of benign relationship beween the PRC and Taiwan governments. Meanwhile, diplomatic interactions also came into the focus of mass media. However, due to the distinct political systems of the two governments, diplomatic negotiations have not always been smooth and hence a solution to bypassing this disparity is needed in order to accomplish further and better diplomatic interactions. Although cross-strait commercial collaborations have expanded tremendously over the past few years, the potential of connecting people from both sides of the strait via economic development is still questionable. Sharing the same origin, the oriental cultural backgrounds allow Chinese people on both sides of the strait to develop mutual understanding easily, thus generating a sense of intimacy deep down in their hearts. For people who have experienced this enduring separation, it is therefore important to figure out their common aspiration and then to stimulate advocacy of unity from them with it. It is based on the agreement of unity from both sides that can fundamentally resolve current issues in bilateral interactions, including politic conflicts. Regarding to the Cross-Strait relationship, comprehending the crucial role of culture in political interactions and underscoring the positive effects of culture in establishing connections are required to achieve sustainable and healthy bilateral relations, thus benefiting the Chinese people on both sides of the strait.
