Recently, the plating industry has been changed the conventional plating process with the composite plating process for product cost reduction, but it is difficult to treat and stabilize due to the characteristics of the composite plating wastewater with a mixture of heavy metals ionized and complexed by EDTA and high concentration of organics with the conventional heavy metal treatment process. Therefore, the development of process capable of treating a composite plating wastewater and also operation and maintenance at low cost has been demanded urgently. In this study, three kinds of alternative oxidation processes as Fenton, Fenton-like and electro-Fenton/Fenton like were proposed to stably treat complex compounds into the composite plating wastewater being discharged from the composite plating process.
To search for an optimal process conditions and techniques that could treat the target heavy metals(Nickel and Zinc) and organic matter into composite plating wastewater efficiently in the proposed process, this study is performed the experiment as compared to the conventional process and the proposed process. The results obtained were as follows.
In the composite plating wastewater treatment by coagulation process using conventional iron salts, aluminum salts, Na2S to remove heavy metals, the increase for excess sludge occurs due to the over-injection of coagulants as well as the removal efficiency of the complexed heavy metal like zinc and nickel is very low. After an advanced oxidation process(AOP) such as the Fenton and Fenton-like oxidation reactions etc. process using a hydroxide precipitation step, was to remove the heavy metal complex compound better than conventional treatment process, Zn was almost completely removed, especially. Electro-Fenton-coagulation process was the most favorable of the proposed three processes.(Fenton, Fenton-like and electro-Fenton/Fenton-like processes) In this process, a concentration of nickel(Ni) decreased to 19.3mg/L (removal efficiency, 59.8%) in initial concentration of 48mg/L, zinc(Zn) concentration is from 126mg/L to 0.6mg/L(99.5%), and COD is from 2560.0mg/L to 413.9mg/L(83.8 %), Electro-Fenton process appeared at least the organic removal efficiency of about 25% or more than Fenton and Fenton-like processes.
From operation results for Electro-Fenton-coagulation process, the results of best removal efficiencies for target materials were showed in case of the bipolar type reactor consisted of plate-electrode(width×height, 100mm×105mm) with gap of 30mm packed with granular activated carbon, the reaction time 10min, a current density of 3.74mA/cm2, the Fenton process of ratio of Fe(Ⅱ)/H2O2 of 20mM/600mM, reaction time of 60min at initial value of pH 5 and coagulation process under the operating condition for pH value 12, velocity gradient(G) of 240sec-1.
