This study is to produce bio-ethanol by using fallen leaves, which is biomass, as a fermentation substrate in consideration of situation in Korea. In order to enhance the production efficiency of bioethanol, the study compared the saccharification efficiency of various enzymes after pretreatment. And Tween-80, nonionic surfactant, was tested to enhance saccharification efficiency by coping with hydrophobicity resulted from torrefaction. Also the study confirmed the ethanol production by applying separate hydrolysis and fermentation(SHF) process and Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation(SSF) process.
In result confirmed the glucose production by the various enzyme, we most obtained fermentable glucose production from cellulase by characteristic of lignocellulosic biomass, also got the glucose production high in result of mixed enzymes.
And then, saccharification of torrefied biomass conducted by applying best condition obtained by the above result. As a result of this experiment, we could know that conversion of sugar by torrefied biomass was 10% higher than result of chemical pretreatment. And enzyme ratio of 7:3 had high glucose production.
As a result of adding surfactant, sugar conversion was higher when the biomass was saccharified addition of tween-80. It was found torrefaction can be applied as a pretreatment for lignocellulosic biomass and tween-80 is needed to enhance its enzyme saccharification.
Ethanol production was conducted using SHF. After injected enzyme, glucose production was 2258 mg glucose/ g biomass by the highest sugar conversion. At that time, fermentation was conducted using S. cerevisiae, it obtained about 0.4 g ethanol/ g biomass.
Therefore, this expected to solve the problem of recycling and processing about fallen leaves seasonally. Also, it was confirmed by the energy source potential for bio-fuel in Korea with limits to the production of ethanol as a matter of starch-based or carbohydrate-based supply.
