Béla Bartók(1881-1945) is a representative composer and a pianist of the early twentieth century who created the authentic musical language of his own through research on folk music. He and his fellow composer Zoltán Kodály(1882-1967) reconsidered esthetic concepts of folk music through systematic and scientific researches by collecting, recording and transcribing Hungarian folk songs and developed the compositional techniques of his own by combining traditional techniques of western music based on folk themes. Furthermore, his music played a role in establishing indigenous music of Hungary. This thesis has briefly examined Béla Bartók's life and the characteristics of piano music according to stylistic changes in music to help comprehensive understanding of Béla Bartók and analyzed「Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, Op. 20」 based on musical structure, melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo and dynamics. 「Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, Op. 20」is the composer’s first attempt in combining modern musical expression and folk material. This work consists of 8 pieces of short impromptus which can be, with attaca markings, grouped into 4 sections of No. 1-2, No. 3-5, No. 6 and No. 7-8. This piece utilizes modern musical expressions including octave displacement of melody and bi-modality based on the mode of folk music. As for the harmony, bitonality, tone cluster and quartal chord are used, and a trace of twelve-tone technique is also found. In addition, original compositional techniques include parlando-rubato rhythm, irregular changes of meter, syncopation, frequent tenuto and accent markings, and detailed tempo and dynamic indications.
