The purpose of this study is to apply young children's activities at a community of philosophical inquiry using picture books related to the themes of Daily lives in Nuri-program for 3-5 year old children designed by the Korean Ministry of Education, and then provide a foundation of effective children’s book activity materials applicable to young children’s education sites through research results about the effect of these activities on the emotional competence. Thus, as research subjects, this study selected 67 4 to 5-year-old children of a preschool in Gandong-gu, Seoul and conducted an experiment from Nov. 29, 2013 to Feb. 21, 2014 and analyzed the results of this experiment. As young children’s emotional competence factors, there were self-emotion perception and expression, emotional control and impulse suppression, use of self-emotions, recognition and consideration of other's emotions, relationship with teachers and relationship with peers. First, this study verified if young children have different emotional competences depending on whether they have activities at a community of philosophical inquiry using picture books. Then, to find out if activities at a community of philosophical inquire using picture books have effect on the improvement of young children’s emotional competences, this study conducted pretest and posttest on the experimental group. Besides, to analyze how young children’s emotional competences actually came out during the experiment, this study carried out interviews with their teachers, and by videotaping activities at a community of philosophical inquiry, this study qualitatively analyzed features and changes of young children’s emotional competence factors each session. Lastly, this study investigated if activities at a community of philosophical inquiry using picture books make differences in young children’s emotional competences by age and gender. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; Firstly, it was found that there were some differences in young children’s emotional competences, depending on whether they had activities at a community of philosophical inquiry. As a result of analyzing the posttest of young children’s emotional competences between the control group and the experimental group that secured the homogeneity of young children’s emotional competences, it was found that there were statistically significant differences between the two groups, and activities at a community of philosophical inquiry using picture books were effective in the improvement of young children’s emotional competences. Secondly, to verify the effectiveness of activities at a community of philosophical inquiry using picture books, this study comparatively analyzed the pretest and posttest on the experimental group. As a result, the mean score increased in all the emotional competence factors, and there were statistically significant differences found. In addition, as a result of analyzing the data of young children’s utterances and teachers’ interviews from such an activity, this study confirmed concrete contents corresponding to each factor. Thirdly, activities at a community of philosophical inquiry using picture books had main effect on all the factors of young children’s emotional competences by age, but did not show any main effect by gender. Young children at the age of 5 showed a higher degree of emotional competence improvement through activities at a community of philosophical inquiry using picture book than those at the age of 4, but there was no difference found in their emotional competence improvement between the male children and the female children. It is significant that this study confirmed the effect of activities at a community of philosophical inquiry on the improvement of young children’s emotional competences by actually applying such activities to ordinary young children’s class sites. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that ‘Activities at a Community of Philosophical Inquiry using Picture Books’ will be used as a part of the education program for young children education institutions to improve young children’s emotional competence.
