An Inquiry into Teachers' Learning Community Experience and Infants' Responses: Focused on Wordless Picture Books원문보기

The purpose of the study was to explore appropriate wordless picture book guidance methods for infants through collaborative teachers’ learning community and infants’ responses to wordless picture book guidance. This study ultimately aims to improve the teachers’ expertise in reading wordless picture books and to provide basic data for developing programs on wordless picture book guidance methods. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, the following research questions were formulated: Question 1. How was the teachers’ experiences of collaborative learning community for wordless picture book guidance with infants? Question 2. How was the infants’ responses to the teachers’ guidance with wordless picture books? This study was carried out 3 times a week for 8 weeks (24 sessions in total) from March 25 to May 16, 2019 at a daycare center located in G district in S city. The research was conducted with three infant teachers and 15 infants under their care. The research involved observing the infants’ responses as the teachers read wordless picture books to them 3 times a week and conducting an online discussion about the observation of infants’ responses and teaching methods. Data were collected through audio recordings, transcripts, observation records, and reflective journals. At the end of each wordless picture book reading session, teachers shared about the infants’ responses through discussions, reflected on their teaching methods and made basic materials that can be applied to the next session. Also, when video recording was impossible, the teachers were asked to make every efforts not to miss the infants’ responses by recording their non-verbal responses in short words or codes. When this method was judged to interfere with the flow of reading the wordless picture book, the teachers were asked to describe the infants’ responses so that data for the infants’ facial expressions and responses are obtained through audio recordings. Recordings of the infants’ responses to wordless picture book activities were transcribed on the same day of the session, and recordings for all 24 sessions were transcribed. After each session, the teachers engaged in a discussion and wrote reflective journals, thinking about the nature of this study, and explored and shared about teaching strategies for reading wordless picture books that can be applied to infants later on. Materials shared in this way were applied in the following session, allowing data collection through a cyclical model of application, reflection, and reapplication. Data analysis was based on 68 A4-size pages of transcripts, 4,800 minutes of audio recordings, online discussion materials, researcher’s reflective journals, and field observation records. Transcripts for each session were reviewed on the day so that it was prepared to grasp the meaning of the content. As the session transcripts accumulated, the transcripts were read repeatedly to understand the intent contained in the material and the meaning within a context. In order to ensure the validity of data analysis and interpretation, the teachers shared meaningful contents of the data through a member check and a peer debriefing and discussed whether the interpretations are reasonable. The results of the study were as follows: First, as for the teachers’ experiences of collaborative learning community for wordless picture book guidance with infants, the teachers had the preconception that wordless picture books were unfamiliar medium and had mixed feelings of concern and anticipation due to lack of understanding for concrete guidance methods using wordless picture books. However, the participating teachers were able to grow as interactive communicators instead of being a conveyer or transmitter through the collaborative learning community experience and developed more interest in wordless picture books as they experienced the educational effects and values of wordless picture books. Also, as they became more familiar with wordless picture books, the teachers shared various emotions contained in the wordless picture books with the infants. In addition, they were finally able to discover the pleasure of freedom offered by wordless picture books from collaborating with other teachers. Second, as for the infants’ responses to the teachers’ guidance with wordless picture books, they became more fluent in naming things as the teachers paid attention to their verbal responses. Infants who used to respond in short words or nods started to use words and sentences. They also showed responses such as self-centered naming or representation through body movements when assimilated to the content of the book. In addition, the infants and the teachers were able to create new stories based on the teachers’ attentive listening and expansion. This study confirmed the potential of wordless picture books as an effective teaching material for infants and the possibilities of enhancing teaching strategies through collaborative teaching community by analyzing wordless picture books and conducting a qualitative investigation on teachers’ guidance transformation through collaborative teaching and the infants’ responses to picture book activity. This study is significant in that its findings have practical implications for improving teachers’ expertise in and teaching strategies for wordless picture books appropriate for infants and that this study provides basic data for developing programs on wordless picture book guidance methods.
