Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of group music therapy on the stress, coping, social support, anxiety and depression of elementary school upper graders from low-income families.
Methods: The subjects in this study were 37 children who were selected from among 139 fifth and sixth graders in an elementary school located in the city of Jeonju. The selected students were either belonged to the near-poverty group or were basic livelihood security recipients. Out of them, 10 students were selected again with the consent of students and their parents. An experimental group and a control group were randomly organized with 10 students each. But the number of the members of the experimental group was reduced to nine since one student was excluded due to his low attendance rate, and there was no change in the number of the control group members. A group music therapy was provided for the experimental group 20 times, twice a week, 45 minutes each, and no action was taken for the control group. The instruments used in this study were inventories that were respectively designed to check sociodemographic characteristics, daily stress, stress-coping behavior, social support, anxiety, depression, self-esteem and ego-resilience. As for data analysis, independent-samples t-test was utilized to check the homogeneity of the two groups, and mixed ANOVA was made to see whether there was any interaction between the groups and the testing time.
Results: The findings of the study were as follows:
First, when the homogeneity pretest was conducted, there were no significant differences between the experimental group and the control group in stress, stress-coping behavior, social support, anxiety, depression, self-esteem and ego-resilience.
Second, the group music therapy served to significantly reduce the experimental group's parent-related stress among the subfactors of daily stress.
Third, the group music therapy served to significantly improve the experimental group's coping of social-support pursuit among the subfactors of stress-coping behavior.
Fourth, the group music therapy served to significantly increase the social support of the experimental group.
Fifth, the group music therapy served to significantly relieve the anxiety of the experimental group.
Sixth, the group music therapy served to significantly relieve the depression of the experimental group.
Seventh, the group music therapy served to significantly boost the self-esteem and ego-resilience of the experimental group.
Conclusions: The group music therapy exercised a significant influence on the daily stress of the elementary school upper-grade children and some of their stress-coping factors. And the therapy served to improve social support, self-esteem and ego-resilience and to relieve anxiety and depression. The findings of this study suggest that the group music therapy may be used as a valuable intervention method to facilitate the sound psychosocial development of school children from the low-income families.
