This study investigated and analyzed methods of natural lighting in church structures in Seoul Metropolitan Area, drew out types and characteristics of them and studied and analyzed emotional responses with photos of spaces which only natural lighting in the church. The results of analysis on natural lighting of churches are as follows; First, as for the direction of the window, southwest was the most frequent direction for pulpit while it was north for congregational seat. Second, as for the types and kinds of the windows, top-side window was the most frequently used and fan light and inclined window were frequently used for pulpit. In addition, side window was the most frequently used and vertical window was frequently used for congregational seats. Third, as for the materials of the windows, stained glass was frequently used for side windows while translucent and transparent window were used for topside window. Fourth, as for illumination, congregational seats were the highest with case F while pulpit was the highest with case B. Fifth, as for the kind of light, both pulpit and congregational seat most frequently used scattered light. This study also assessed and analyzed satisfaction with natural lighting and preference for reverence and the results of study on emotional assessment on individual churches are as follows; First, questionnaire respondents preferred more intensive natural lighting in pulpit to natural lighting in congregational seats. Second, as for the satisfaction with natural lighting and preference for reverence, questionnaire respondents preferred case B the most which used sky light and top side window for pulpit and side window for congregational seats whereas case I was assessed the lowest which used only side window for congregational seats. Third, as the result of research on emotional assessment of churches which only has natural lighting, for case A and G which used topside window for pulpit, questionnaire respondents induced emotions of 'intensive, symbolic, intense, unfamiliar, dark, simple, gloomy and heavy' space while for case C, E and I, they induced the emotions of 'familiar, blurry, dissipative, soft, non-symbolic, orderly, artless, ordinary, simple, gloomy, unpleasant, heavy and dark' space. Case B induced the emotions of 'beautiful, unique, symbolic, clear, soft, comfortable, delicate' space and case F induced the emotions of 'bright, unique, unfamiliar, disorderly, unnatural, disharmonious' space while case H induced the emotions of 'unique, unfamiliar, disharmonious, heavy, unpleasant and dark' space. Fourth, emotions toward church differ depending on the gender of the users, which is necessary to be considered in the design of the churches. Therefore, designing of a church considering natural light requires reflection of various conditions of the users when using churches. Currently, as the majority of religious structures depend on artificial lighting, the meaning of light for religious structures is fading away. In this context, this study analyzed natural lighting of the church and has the meaning in that it analyzed and suggested preference of natural lighting and emotional assessment so that they can be used as materials for the future designs of the churches which plan to introduce natural lighting into their interiors. And yet, this study has limitations in that number of its study subjects remains only 9 churches and there is lack of analysis on various lighting methods, which limits application of the study results to generalized natural lighting. In order to enhance the reliability and validity of the study, more comprehensive and systematic studies including collection of opinions of experts and studies on diverse natural lightings should follow in the future.
