Most of the existing studies on earth pressure against the support systems mainly focused on the soil ground (sand and clay) but ground is composed of not only the soils but also rocks. In many regions of Korea and some other countries of the world, soil layers are relatively shallow therefore rock layer appeared in very shallow depth. Excavation works for various purposes are often taking place in ground composed of soils and rocks, and rock has frequent joints, which its strength and condition significantly affect the overall behavior of the rock masses. This thereby makes the systematic study of the earth pressure in rock ground to be highly crucial.
This thesis described a study which investigated the earth pressure characteristics against the support systems in jointed rock masses. The study comprehensively analyzed various factors affecting earth pressure and integrated results of the analyses to develop the earth pressure envelopes for designing support systems in jointed rock masses.
This study utilized the physical model test data from the large-scale model tests (1/10 scale) conducted at Daegu University’s Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory, field measurements from various case histories, and numerical parametric studies which examined the influence of controlled variation of ground (rocks and joints) conditions, structure (wall and strut) conditions and groundwater conditions. The parameters for the numerical studies include different rock types, joint characteristics (inclination angles, shear conditions, spacing, cohesive strengths, number of joint sets etc), support properties (strut axial stiffness, strut vertical spacing, wall embedment depth etc), rock strata (single and multi-layered rocks), earth pressure coefficients and groundwater conditions. Also, the earth pressures in rock stratum due to these controlled parameters were compared with Peck’s empirical earth pressure for sand ground.
The numerical analyses were carried out using Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC), which can consider the joint characteristics of a rock stratum and the interactions between the ground and retaining structure. The rock blocks, wall and struts were simulated as separate elastic elements. The joints between the rock blocks and the interfaces between walls and rocks were modeled using the Coulomb slip model in which when the contact shear stress exceeds the contact shear strength the contact loses strength and sliding occurs. This thesis included the results of the physical model test, numerical parametric studies and field measurements. The study also reviewed the existing studies on the determination of earth pressure acting on the support systems including the effects of some of the controlled parameters on earth pressure in soils.
The effects of the aforementioned controlled parameters on the magnitude and distribution of earth pressure against the support systems in joint rock masses were discussed. The results of the study were integrated and comprehensively analyzed using slope mass rating (SMR). Finally, the systematic earth pressure envelopes, which may be useful in excavation field practice, were developed for rock ground.
