Currently, demand for effective and economical drug delivery method is rapidly increasing because Korean society has entered to the aging society. Thus, we expect target specific drug delivery and new administration regimens have been developed. As a result, the number of studies has been conducted on targeted drug delivery technology in order to deliver minimum amount of drug to a specific site. Ultrasound has an advantage in convenient use and of allowing repetitive use. Owing to these characteristics of ultrasound and contrast agent, ultrasound assisted drug delivery can be utilized as effective treatment method which can increase the absorption of the drug through the site increased cell permeability of the body of the disease. Most of the previous studies on the ultrasound contrast agent, they focused on an observation of physical characteristics of ultrasound parameters. Also, experimental studies on the flow induced by the ultrasound contrast agent is lacking. Therefore, it is desired to develop a basic technology of measurement of flow induced by oscillating ultrasound contrast agent. In this study, the streaming flow induced by bubble cluster motion and oscillation, and UCA cluster formation and translation by ultrasound sonication were optically observed. In addition, streamings flow induced by the microbubbles was measured by Particle-Image-Velocimetry (PIV) system. Fully developed laminar flow in a circular pipe was measrued by PIV in order to confirm the accuracy of the PIV systems and the experimental result, were compared with the theory. The experimental results were agreeded well with the theoretical formula for the flow rate range of 0.4ml/min to 4ml/min. The flow caused by the ultrasound contrast agents using ultrasonic wave was measured using the PIV. During the movement of bubble clusters, vortical streaming with the velocity of 10 mm/s was formed. When 1 MHz sonication started, microbubbles attracted and repelled by secondary radiation forces and formed clusters near the pressure nodes within 100 ms. It was moved towards the wall of the tube by the primary radiation force and was located in the place where the balance of drag force and primary radiant forces was maintained. In the flow experiments in a circular pipe without ultrasound contrast agents flow induced by the primary radiation force of ultrasound was not observed. In this study, the flow from microbubbles oscillation by ultrasound has been observed and measured. It was also shown that the movement of the bubble due to acoustic radiant force, generated streaming flow which may improve drug delivery efficiency.
