Analysis on the Context of Female Characters in Elementary Social Studies Textbooks : Focused on the Historical Context원문보기

The existing historical descriptions are from a male perspective, but there has been a movement to overcome the gender stereotypes in textbook writing according to the perspective of gender equality on the back of the changing flows of education by the national and social needs in the late 20th century. The needs of these days have especially been reflected in the Revised Curriculum of 2009 that has increased the number of female characters and related descriptions. Following the flow, this study aimed to compare and analyze descriptions related to female characters both in quantity and quality in the Seventh Elementary Curriculum, Revised Curriculum of 2007, and Revised Curriculum of 2009 and the textbooks of those curriculums and investigate their effects on students.
The criteria based on which to select figures to be introduced in a textbook include exhibiting the characteristics of a period well, making a contribution to the development of people and nation, representing each area of culture, and contributing to the improved life of people. Those criteria make it difficult to introduce female characters in a textbook, which was why the study paid attention to the selection of the people or obscure common people as materials of figures study. When examined in that approach, there were 193 and 192 historic figures introduced in textbooks under the Seventh Curriculum and the Revised Curriculum of 2007, respectively. Of them, female characters were only five and eight, respectively. Their percentage in the textbook descriptions in Social Studies and Social Studies Inquiry altogether was 4.9% under the Seventh Curriculum and 20.9% in the first and second semester of the fifth grade under the Revised Curriculum of 2007. In addition, four to five female characters were repeatedly presented with no female characters from the MiddleAges(Goryeo). The quantitative analysis results point to a considerable shortage of women-related descriptions in the textbooks.
The study consulted the criteria by Sadker(1997) to conduct qualitative analysis of women-related descriptions in the textbooks, and they include uses of sexually discriminatory language, reinforcement of gender stereotypical roles, scarcity of women, unbalanced content, unrealistic content, and separation from the main content. Based on the criteria, the investigator carried out qualitative analysis of women-related descriptions and illustrations in the Social Studies and Social Studies Inquiry textbooks of the first semester of the sixth grade under the Seventh Curriculum and those of the first and second semester of the fifth grade under the Revised Curriculum of 2007 according to the criteria fit for the educational process of South Korea including gender discriminatory language, gender stereotypes, scarcity of women, and separation from the main content.
The qualitative analysis results show that many of the women-related descriptions in the textbooks were in a male position and that women became scarce in most cases through the addition of an unnecessary postposition ‘-까지도’ to the things women did and an unnecessary illustration that had nothing to do with the female content. A narrative description style was mainly used when depicting female characters since it was based on gender stereotypes and could maximize the content of textbooks. Furthermore, female characters that were mentioned in the textbooks were introduced only in the form of period rather than achievement or merely named among male characters. They were mostly introduced in Social Studies Inquiry rather than the main textbook and separated from the principal content.
Based on the analysis results, the study made the following proposals: first, female characters from various fields and chronics should be identified and introduced in a textbook; second, female characters should be equal to their male counterparts both in quantity and quality from the perspective of gender equality. It is the same with the illustrations introduced in the textbooks. The Social Studies textbooks are the first means and methods of learning historical knowledge for students. If it is one of the goals to bring up individuals with independent historical consciousness in the changing society, there is a need to reflect the changed perceptions of women according to the changes of times and society in the Social Studies(History) textbooks and reflect upon the perceptions so far.
