Schm.)

Phenolics compounds are a large group of chemical compounds that possess at least a hydroxyl functional group bonded directly to an aromatic group on their structure. Naturally occurring phenolic compounds show a structural diversity and encompass various structural types including phenylpropanoids, coumarins, flavonoids, lignans, and tannins. A number of plant-derived phenolic compounds have the wide range of the medicinal values, and have been used as drugs due to their antioxidant or free radical scavenging properties. Glehnia littoralis Fr. Schm. (Umbelliferae) is a herbaceous perennial plant growing on the sandy area of eastern Asia, and the root and rhizome of this plant have been traditionally used as tonic, antiphlogistic, and mucolytic for the treatment of the respiratory and gastrointestinal disorder. Considerable interest has continued in secondary metabolites from the subterranean part of these plants, however, extensive investigation for the aerial part have not been performed yet. As part of a search for discovering biologically active compounds of natural origin, six phenolic compounds were isolated from the whole plants of Glehnia littoralis (GL). The whole plant of GL was extracted with MeOH, and then suspended with water, followed by the fractionation with n-hexane, EtOAc, and n-BuOH. The EtOAc fraction of GL was analyzed and separated by us- ing their structures were identified as 6-carboxyethyl-4,7-dimethoxy-5-hydro-xybenzofuran 5-O-β-D-glucoside (1), chlorogenic acid (2), 3ʹ-O-methylchlorogenic acid (3), quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucoside (4), quercetin 3-O-rutinoside (5), kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside (6).
