Wetlands are ecotones connecting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Despite their functional importance for flood control, water purification, preservation of biodiversity, resource value, and landscape value, wetlands have lost their functions and finally disappeared due to developments for the convenience of people. Lately, interest in wetland restoration has risen because of the damage caused by imprudent development and environmental destruction. For this reason, many studies have been conducted on restoring wetlands using marsh vegetation. A total of 22 areas containing Phragmites australis communities were selected from the west to the south coastline to analyze the flora, growth dynamics, and environmental factors. In the 22 areas investigated for this study, a total of 40 species from 20 families of vascular plants were found. In most areas, Phragmites australis formed a single colony and showed high areal coverage (>90% on average). The moisture content of the soil in the 22 areas was 28.07% on average, and the soil organic matter in the areas was 3.35% on average. The soil pH and the soil salinity in the 22 areas averaged 6.84 and 5.86 ppt, respectively. The soil electrical conductivity showed a similar tendency with the soil salinity. In the 22 areas, the total nitrogen was 1.02 mg/g and the available phosphorus was 286.50 µg/g, on average. The dissolved oxygen averaged 9.04 mg/L in the areas. The pH and the salt concentration of water averaged 7.71 and 13.66 ppt, respectively, in the 22 areas. The nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) was 1.0712 mg/L and the ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) was 0.3790 mg/L on average in the 22 areas. The phosphate-phosphorous (PO43--P) averaged 0.0593 mg/L in the areas. The results of the investigation on the growth dynamics in Phragmites australis communities showed that the aboveground growth increment of Phragmites australis was 198.4 cm/yr on average in the 22 areas, and the average annual production was 1743.61 g DM/m2. The correlation analysis of Phragmites australis communities, edaphic factors, and water quality factors revealed that there was a relatively strong negative correlation between salinity, an edaphic factor, and the aboveground growth increment (-0.726), the lengths of leaves (-0.737), the width of leaves (-0.599), and the annual production (-0.584) of Phragmites australis. The ordination using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) of the growth increment, edaphic factors, and water quality factors showed that soil salinity, water salinity, and water nitrate-nitrogen play important roles in the types of Phragmites australis communities. The results of genetic diversity analysis in the 22 areas showed different values ranging from 0.3827 to 0.4794 for each area investigated in this study. In the analysis of genetic relationships, it was revealed that populations can mostly be divided into two types: the west coast population and southwest-south coast population. Phragmites australis seeds from fresh, estuary, and sea water areas were germinated and cultivated in different salinity environments. The population cultivated at freshwater salinity level showed sustained growth for eight weeks, and the seeds from the freshwater area showed the greatest elongation growth. The Phragmites australis population cultivated at estuary water salinity level showed a decrease in elongation growth after three weeks due to salinity stress, and the elongation growth of the population cultivated at seawater salinity level appeared to be affected by salinity stress after two weeks. The seeds from the freshwater area showed the greatest elongation growth in freshwater salinity and estuary water salinity levels; further, distinct differences in growth were noted among the seeds from the sea, estuary, and fresh water areas, in the order of the most to least growth, in seawater salinity level. In Korea, there are various types of wetlands such as inland wetlands, estuary water wetlands formed at the mouth of a river, and saltwater wetlands occurring alongside coastlines. Therefore, it is considered effective to determine the type of wetland and select appropriate fresh, estuary, or sea water types of Phragmites australis for wetland ecosystem restoration.
