In the modern society, due to high economic growth and the rapid improvement of living standards, significant change occurred in social environment and lifestyle, and dietary style in particular. Dietary style is the most basic and important element of various life phenomena that human beings engage in and serves the function of satisfying not only human physiological needs but also social and psychological needs. Adolescence is a period with extremely fast physical change and development, and requiring energy and nutrition most in a life cycle, in which snacks in addition to regular meals are absolute necessity for insufficient nutritional intake. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate dietary habits and health conditions in relation to late-night snacking such as the form of after-school late-night snacking that accounts for significant portion of snacking. Study participants consisted of 450 male and female 11th grade students in certain areas of Busan who were administered a questionnaire, and a total of 430 returned surveys were included in the study, excluding non-respondents or those who did not respond as instructed. Research procedures involved participants completing a questionnaire during a class morning conference under their home room teachers’ guidance, analysis of collected data using SPSS19, and obtaining frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations for general characteristics, eating behavior and intake frequency related to late-night snacking and health condition of study participants. In order to determine the difference between male and female students in eating behavior, intake frequency, and health condition, crosstabulation, t-test, and one-way ANOVA were performed, and to investigate the direction and the strength of relationships among Todai Health Index (THI) scores as well as study variables, Pearson correlational analysis was performed. Analysis results on gender-specific health concern patterns using THI examination tables showed higher scores among female than male students in both physical and psychological items. The larger discrepancy between male and female students due to elevations in female students’ scores in psychological items than in physical items suggests that mental problems are more serious among female students than male students, and a greater level of irregularity in daily routine is associated with a higher level of anxiety. Therefore, the education to heighten the awareness of the importance of daily routine is believed to be urgently required. On the other hand, participants reported the main reason for 2-3 times of late-night snacking was ‘out of hunger’, and they were aware that snacking went beyond easing the hunger and led to overeating, causing weight gain and obesity. In addition, they were aware that it leads to skipping a meal next morning due to a lack of appetite. From the finding that what they considered most when choosing late-night snacks is not ‘nutritious food’ but ‘taste’, we can speculate how much students are lacking in food-related information and rely solely on favorite food. It was found that the food that is consumed as late-night snack is mostly junk food such as chips, crackers, and fast food with high energy but low nutrition, except milk and soy milk, among others. To make a recommendation based on the summary of the results, it is needed to acknowledge the benefits of after-school late-night snacking as a form of snacking, including providing nutrition, relieving stress, and refreshment, rather than boycotting it by highlighting its downsides, and provide ongoing education in school, home, and media on desirable dietary style and nutrition as well as the importance of regular meals. In addition, it is believed that healthy late-night snacking culture needs to be established among adolescents by recommending late-night snacks with abundant nutritious including protein, fiber, minerals, and vitamins, as in seasonal fruits, nuts, fresh vegetables such as cucumbers and carrots rather than junk food.
